Biography

John Cutler immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

John Cutler was born about 1625, probably in Sprowston, Norfolk, England. He was the son of John and Mary Cutler. His parents were Puritans, persecuted adherents of Rev. Robert Peck. They possibly traveled on the ship "Rose" of Yarmouth, which sailed from England in April, 1637. John and Mary, a servant and seven children traveled to New England.

His parents settled in Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts. John's father died in 1638, the family was destitute and some of the older children were taken in by a relative, Robert Cutler of Charleston. His widowed mother later married Thomas Hewett of Hingham.

On July 3, 1650, in Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts , John married Olive Thompson They had three children, including a daughter named Mary who died at three. Olive herself died before 1657 at Woburn.

John then married Mary Browne, also born in England, the daughter of Abraham and Lydia Browne. Children of John and Mary include:

  • Mary Cutler, born May 5, 1663, in Woburn, married 1) Matthew Smith and had four children, and 2) Joseph Dutton and had seven more children

John died at Woburn about 1678. According to History of Woburn, John died of small pox and was living at the residence of Isaac Brooks at the time of his death.[1] John's widow Mary later married Matthew Smith Sr.
