Lieutenant Samuel Cutter is a Revolutionary War Officer. In one source, he is listed as "Cutler, Samuel (Mass.), 2d Lieutenant of Gardner's Massachusetts Regiment, May to December 1775; 2nd Lieutenant 27th Continental Infantry, 1st January to 31st December 1776." [1]

Twenty-seven battalions were organized in Massachusetts, immediately after the Lexington Alarm. They appeared not to have been numbered, but were known by the names of their respective commanders. Gardiner's was commanded by Colonel Thomas Gardner from June 2, 1775 to July 3, 1775 with Lieutenant-Colonel William Bond as his second in command. William Bond was promoted to full Colonel and commanded the unit from July 3, 1775 to December 1775, with Major Michael Jackson as his second in command. [2] [3] [4] [5]

Samuel Cutter Jr was born on January 21, 1736 in Charlestown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, son of Samuel Cutter and Anne (Harrington) Francis. [6]

On May 28, 1757, Samuel married Susanna Francis, [6] daughter of Ebenezer Frances and Rachel Whittemore Tufts.

Together, they had eleven known children:

  1. Samuel Cutter, III, b. January 30, 1758.[6]
  2. William Cutter, b. July 15, 1759.[6]
  3. Susannah Cutter, b. March 12, 1761.[6]
  4. Francis Cutter, b. April 15, 1763.[6]
  5. Ezekial Cutter, b. December 24, 1764.[6]
  6. Ebenezer Cutter, b. December 29, 1766.[6]
  7. Abigail Cutter, b. 1769.

  9. Adam Cutter, b. 1774.
  10. Edward Cutter, b. 1775.
  11. Washington Cutter, b. 1777.

Samuel died April 7, 1791 [6] and was interred in the cemetery known as the "Old Burying Ground" in Arlington, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. His wife survived him and passed away December 19, 1817, at the age of 86 years.

The inscription on Samuel's headstone reads:
