Twenty-seven battalions were organized in Massachusetts, immediately after the Lexington Alarm. They appeared not to have been numbered, but were known by the names of their respective commanders. Gardiner's was commanded by Colonel Thomas Gardner from June 2, 1775 to July 3, 1775 with Lieutenant-Colonel William Bond as his second in command.
