Disputed Origins

Note from Anderson in "The Great Migration Begins" "It has been suggested, without documentation, that Robert Hale's wife was a Cutter."

A previous version of this profile claimed, without source, that her parents were Samuel Cutter and Elizabeth Leatherhead. Lacking a source for this identification, they have been detached as her parents.

Biography

Joanna (her last name at birth is not known) married Robert Hale by October 14, 1632. Robert, supposedly with his wife and family, were admitted as inhabitants of Charlestown in April of 1633. Joanna and Robert had five children, all born and baptized at Charlestown except the final, Joanna whose records have evidently not been found.

Children of Joanna and Robert

  1. John was born on June 3, 1636 and baptized on June 5, 1636. On December 15, 1664 at Ipswich he married Rebecca Byley. At Beverly on March 3, 1684 he married (2nd) Sarah Noyes. At Newbury on August 8, 1698 he married (3rd) the widow Elizabeth (Somerby) Clark Sr.
  2. Mary was born on May 17, 1639 and baptized on May 19, 1639. She married Edward Wilson on November 6, 1656 at Charlestown.
  3. Zacharias was born April 3, 1641 and died at Charlestown on June 5, 1643.
  4. Samuel was born April 9, 1644. He married Lidea Maynard on March 19, 1668 at Charlestown.
  5. Joanna was born about 1646. On November 9, 1664 at Charlestown she married John Larkin.

Robert Hale died at Charlestown on July 16, 1659. Joanna, his widow, remarried to (2nd) Richard Jacob at Charlestown on September 24, 1662.

Joanna died at Charlestown on November 28, 1681. The inventory of her estate was taken on December 17, 1681 and totalled L264, 4s. 6d. This amount included L236 in real estate. In her will, Joanna made reference to three children from her 2nd marriage to Richard Jacob - they were:

  1. Joseph Jacob
  2. Unknown (Jacob) Willard
  3. Judith (Jacob) Hasill

Are there any instances of her being referred to as Jane. I see Anderson refers to her as Johanna, and that some records referred to her as Jone [variant spelling of Jone]. I'm wondering if Jane is just a mistranscription?

Unknown-200710 and Cutter-264 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate.

What is the source for the LNAB of Cutter? Anderson says her LNAB is unknown.

Unknown-200710 and Cutter-264 are not ready to be merged because: With the Unknown having PPP status, merging Cutter into the Unknown would lose the Cutter. There seems to be evidence that Cutter is the correct LNAB. Should Unknown have PPP status removed?

Cutter-306 and Cutter-264 appear to represent the same person because: Parents, spouse match. DOB most likely is 1614.

What is the source for "Cutter" being her maiden name? Anderson in GMB (p. 837) does not include one.
