Biography

Richard Cutter immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Cross of St George
Richard Cutter was born in England.

Birth

It is generally believed that Richard Cutter was born around 1620, probably in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England.[1] Unlike most of his brothers and sisters, no records of his birth have been found to date. No record could be found on the parish book for All Saints church in Newcastle upon Tyne, Baptisms, marriages and burials 1600-1625, the same church where his parents were married and most of his known siblings were baptized. The lower third of the pages between the years of 1614 and 1616 were damaged in the original document making it virtually impossible to read some of those records from the digital copies available.[2] It is possible his birth was recorded in one of those pages. It is also possible he was baptized/christened in another church entirely or that his name or surname was misspelled. There are quite a few Richards who were fathered by Cuthberts in that time period, both in Northumberland and in England in general. However, no birth record could be found that would seem to belong to Richard Cutter.

Richard was, nevertheless, mentioned in his father's will, along with his mother and siblings William, Barbara and Isabella.[3]

Immigration

Richard's name has not been found in any of the passenger lists know to date. He was, nonetheless, made a freeman in 1641 at the Massachusetts Bay Colony, so he obviously immigrated before that.[4] Statements were made by him, his mother and sister Barbara at their confessions when entering the church in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which would indicate that they likely crossed the Atlantic together before 1640.[5]

Colonial Life

According to his descendants Benjamin Cutter and William Richard Cutter, in 1643 Richard became a member of the Artillery Company.[6] Richard was mentioned numerous times in the Town Records between 1641 and 1689. Starting with his becoming a freeman, Richard made several requests to cut trees from the "Commons" to make improvements to his house, to his fence or to build tools. Sometimes he was fined for cutting trees without permission. There are also several disputes involving hogs and cattle.[7][4] Richard's temper can be inferred both by his "Confession" as for comments made by Elijah Corlett, his brother-in-law, when addressing the court after he and Richard won a dispute in 1660. Elijah portrays Richard as a sad, afflicted and weak man, who is sometimes inconsiderate and rash.[8]

Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts

Richard Cutter, born 1611 in England, died 1693 in Cambridge, MA, wives Elizabeth Williams, Frances (Perriman) Amsden, appears on the ODAHAC list of ancestors in the AHAC.[9] Richard joined the AHAC in 1643.

From Whitman's History of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company: Richard Cutter, Cambridge; freeman 1641.[10]

From the AHAC Roll of Members, Richard Cutter appears in the 1643 roster.[11]

Marriage

Richard married twice:

1. Elizabeth, whose maiden name is yet unknown.[12] There has been a lot of debate surrounding her last name at birth. She had at some point been identified as Elizabeth Williams, daughter of Robert Williams of Roxbury. That notion was cast aside since that Elizabeth would be too young in the early 1640s when it is believed the couple got married.[13] However, there was another Elizabeth Williams in New England at the time, daughter of John Williams born in Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony. The record is badly damaged and has been dated between 1620-1639.[14] No reference could be found to the last name of Richard's wife in any of the records currently known. She seems to be always referred to as Mrs. Elizabeth Cutter or simply as Elizabeth. All the sources that list the couple's marriage, such as the town records, seem to originate from a list made by the First Church in Cambridge. The couple was listed in 1641 as Richard Cutter and Mrs. Elizabeth Cutter, along with other couples, as members of the congregation.[15] But since Richard's mother was also called Elizabeth Cutter, the woman listed with Richard could have also been his mother.
There is also a Richard Cutter who married an Elizabeth Haddock in 1630, in the Saint Andrew Parish, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England.[16] Obviously, Richard's birth would have to be earlier than 1620, which could be possible, But it would be unlikely that their first child would have been born in 1645. It would be more likely that Richard and Elizabeth got married in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Elizabeth passed away in March 1661-2. [17]
2. Frances Perriman Emsden widow of Isaac Emsden Feb 14, 1662-63.[18]

Children

It seems Richard had at least seven children with each wife, fourteen in total.

Richard and Elizabeth had the following children:

  1. Elizabeth, born Cambridge, Massachusetts, 15 July 1645.[19]
  2. Samuel, born Cambridge, 3 January 1646/7. [20]

I believe Elizabeth Robinson needs to be detached from Richard's profile. Despite several online genealogies claiming she's Richard and Elizabeth's daughter I couldn't find any sources supporting that. A marriage record hasn't been found and she appears in her children's birth records simply as Elizabeth.
Richard appears to have had three daughters named Elizabeth or Elisabeth.  ??

Hi Charlie!

He did name two of his daughters Elizabeth. One with each wife. I still haven't found death records for the first one so I'm not sure if she died before he had the second one or not.

His mother has been removed as Samuel's wife. Should she be removed as his mother - as well as his siblings - also?
posted by S (Hill) Willson
His mother was Elizabeth Cutter, but her maiden name as Leatherhead is not supported by any sources. The same happens to Samuel Cutter, no evidence connecting him to any of the Cutters that came to New England. The sources indicate that Cuthbert Cutter could be their father instead. I believe her maiden name should be changed either to unknown or to Simpson. I'm waiting to hear from Jen as to how to proceed in this case.
Marcia, thanks for working on these. I saw that Cuthbert had a will mentioning a son Richard, do we have anything yet linking that Cuthbert to this Richard amongst the sources you've been looking at?

Hey, brad! Thanks! It's been slow going. It was hard to find the sources for this family. I had to go to an FHC. I'm still looking for Richard's birth records. I'm going to double check the copies I have of the originals because I thought maybe Richard was a twin and his record was mixed up with one of his siblings. I found them for most of their children. For Elizabeth, for example, I only found burial records. For Richard, so far, only the will and the sources that connect him to the family after their arrival in New England.
The gravestone inscription implies that he was born in about 1621 (aged abt 72 at death on 16 Jun 1693), doesn't it? And is there any source for the claim that his birth occurred in Newcastle Upon Tyne?
posted by Scott McClain
Hey Scott!

Yes it does. And none that I could find so far. I'm planning on visiting one of the FHCs to check copies of the actual records. They only have indexes on FS for this particular parish book - All Saints, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne - and no images available. He mentions in his confession a troubled journey from England, so we know that's where he came from. But I haven't found any birth record so far.

I agree with Jillaine, 18+ was typical. If there was a birth of a child within a few months of the marriage, I might agree with a 15 year old bride. Otherwise it was a rare case. (Edited to add:) Research shows the average age for marriage in Early Colonial New England was nearly 23. Wayback Machine has a study done by Austin College here: Mass. Marriage Ways.

The US / Intl Marriages pedigree charts are not reliable sources. I'd want to see what New England Families cites for associating that specific marriage with the emigrating couple.

Sherry, I have researched a lot of records and people of *this place and era* and rarely if ever found someone marrying as young as 15. The youngest I typically see for this demographic is 18 for females and at least 20 and usually 21 for males.

posted by Jillaine Smith
I disagree with the comment that age 15 was an uncommon age for marriage in that era; There were a great many of that age that were married. I did find one marriage record for Cambridge for Richard Cutter and Elizabeth Williams (1620-1662).

I went ahead and added an appropriate source, added disputed wife section, and deleted Williams from the marriage name in the bio.

I NEED A PM to change Williams to UNKNOWN in the data section, please.
