Biography

Joan Dacre, born about 1433 (aged 26 in 1459), suo jure Lady Dacre, was daughter and co-heiress to Sir Thomas Dacre by Elizabeth Bowet.[1] In 1457 Joan Dacre inherited the title from her father.

Marriage

Joan married Richard Fiennes shortly after June 1446[1] and her uncles were not pleased with the arrangement of Sir Richard Fiennes becoming Baron Dacre by right of his wife. While Joan held the title her uncle Ranulph Dacre, calling himself Lord Dacre, held most of the family manors in the north.[2]

Issue

Joan and Roger had five sons:

  1. John[1]
  2. Thomas[1]
  3. William[1]
  4. Richard[1]
  5. Roger[1]

Joan and Roger had one daughter:

  1. Elizabeth[1]

Death

Joan, Lady Dacre, died March 8 1485/6. She left a will that was dated 13 Oct 1485 and proved 14 Jun 1486.[1]

Will

Joan Fynes Lady Dacre, October 13th, 1485. My body to be buried in the quire of All Saints at Hurstmonceaux, between the high altar and the tomb of Sir Richard Fynes, Knight, my late husband; to Thomas, son of Sir John Fynes, Knight; to Edward Fynes, brother of the said Thomas; to Elizabeth Lady Clinton ’, and Thomas Fynes, my son and daughter, all my chattels. And I appoint my sons Thomas and William Fynes, and Thomas Oxenbridge, my executors. Proved June 14th, 1486.[3]

Merge Notice

This Joan Dacre appears to have been merged with her Aunt, Joan (Dacre) Clifford, Baroness Clifford, daughter of Sir Thomas Dacre by Philippe Neville. The dates and marriages, combined with at least a handful of different gedcoms as sources and biographies, indicate the combination of these two Joans. The aunt was Baroness Clifford, married to Thomas Clifford. This profile is now for Lady Dacre and the biography, dates and sources reflect these changes.

This profile appears to be a blend of two different Joan Dacres, having been through at least a handful of merges.

This profile will be the Joan, b about 1433, married Richard Fiennes shortly after June 1446, five sons, one daughter.

She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Dacre by Elizabth Bowet.

I will make a note about the other Joan as well and have project protected this profile, to help with merges in the future.
