Charles Milby Dale was born 8 Mar 1893 at Brown's Valley, Traverse, Minnesota. He was the son of Fred Vernon Dale and Maud Paine. He died 28 Sep 1978 in a nursing home in Portsmouth, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire.[1]
Charles Milby Dale married 27 Sep 1919[2] at Portsmouth NH to Marion Marvin. daughter of Thomas O. Marvin & Flora Sugden. She was b 5 Sep 1895 Winthrop MA and died 2 Apr 1984 at North Hampton, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire.

He graduated from Minot North Dakota High School in 1911. He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota law school, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1915, and a Bachelor of Laws in 1917. He was admitted to the Minnesota bar in 1917, and was about to begin the practice of law when he entered military service during World War I.
He attended the officers' training camps at Fort Snelling, Minn., and Fort Monroe, Va., and was commissioned a lieutenant and assigned to the coast artillery corps. He was stationed at Fort Constitution, New Castle, New Hampshire, throughout World War I. Discharged 1st Lieut. in the US Army. He enlisted 27 Aug 1917, discharged 17 May 1920.
He settled in Portsmouth in 1919 when World War I ended, and he opened a law practice. He became Portsmouth NH city solicitor two years later and re-elected for that post. Attorney. President of New Hampshire National Bank, and Radio Station WHEB, both Portsmouth NH
Republican. He served two terms as Governor of New Hampshire from 1945 through 1949, when he was succeeded by fellow Republican Sherman Adams. He also served as mayor of Portsmouth New Hampshire three terms, president of the NH state Senate in 1935 and on the (NH) Executive Council in 1937 and 1938.

New England papers have published the announcement of an engagement that is of interest to North Dakota and also to Minnesota. We quote the following from the Portsmouth Chronicle and Boston Transcript on July 12: Mr. and Mrs. Thomas O. Marvin of Brookline announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Marion Marvin, to Lt. Charles Milby Dale, U.S.A., son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred V. Dale, of Minot, N.D. Miss Marvin is a graduate of the Garland School and of the School of Occupational Therapy, and is reconstruction aid at the Naval Hospital, Portsmouth Navy Yard. Lt. Dale is a graduate of the University of Minnesota law school, and was about to begin the practice of law when he entered the war. Charles M. Dale died Monday night at a nursing home. He was 85. Mr. Dale, a Republican served two terms as governor, from 1945 to 1949, and formerly was mayor of Portsmouth. He was New Hampshire's oldest living governor.

Dale, who had been New Hampshire's oldest living former governor, died Monday night at a nursing home in Portsmouth. Dale, 85, a native of Brown's Valley, Minn., served two terms from 1945 through 1949, when he was succeeded by fellow Republican Sherman Adams. Adams is one of six surviving former New Hampshire governors. Dale came to New Hampshire during World War I while serving in the Coast Guard. He settled in Portsmouth in 1919 when he opened a law practice, and became city solicitor two years later. He also served as mayor three terms, president of the state Senate in 1935 and on the Executive Council in 1937 and 1938. Dale is survived by his wife, Ruth. Gov. Meldrim Thompson said: "I have lost a close friend and supporter," and ordered flags at state buildings to be flown at half-staff until burial.
