Charley was the only one in the family to be able to enlist for the Light Horse during the first war. He traveled to Western Australia and left for Cairo to join the Palestine campaign.

On his return he stayed in the west for a year before returning home to Victoria. He made his life on a return serviceman's selection Sunset country (because it was unsuitable for farming it is now a national park) near Mildura. He also owned and operated Pubs from Mildura to Nylle in Victoria.

However, though he was wealthy he lived alone in a plywood caravan on his desert farm. His fiancee had married while he was away at the war and so never married. He died alone in the caravan and was found by one of his brothers who drove up from Geelong to find out what had happened to him.
