Sarah was born before 1766 in Norfolk County, Virginia, reportedly to Winfield and Ann Sutherland Dale. Sarah Dale married Benjamin Coakley in 1787[1], eventually moving to the port town of Washington on the Pamlico River in Beaufort County, North Carolina.
She identified her sister, Elizabeth Hill, and five children in her 1804 will[2]: 1) son Benjamin Dale Coakley; 2) daughter Nancy Salley Southerland Dale Coakley; 3) son William Winfield Dale Coakley; 4) daughter Salley Elizabeth Murfree Dale Coakley; and 5) daughter Mary Murfree Dale Coakley. She passed away about 1805.
