Mary Dalrymple marriedJohn A Sheppard (1798-1871)[1] in North Carolina (see research notes). They settled in Moore County (now Lee County) and raised their family.[4]
Mary became a member of the Salem Presbyterian Church on 10 May 1868, when it was established.[12] Her daughters, Nancy, Mary Jane and Alah (Mahalah) V Sheppard joined the same day, by letter from Buffalo Church.[12]
She was the sole beneficiary of her husband's will, with an understanding that she would divide it among her children when she died and provide for them while she lived. The will was in probate in 1872, which indicates she was still living at that time.[13]
Mary did about 1875 and is buried at Salem Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Sanford, Lee, North Carolina.[12]
Research Notes
Dalrymple is a Scottish surname that was taken from the barony of the same name, in Ayrshire.[14]
The profile originally stated that Mary was born in Scotland, however, all records found support a birth location in North Carolina. Note, a birth record has not been located. Crawford-15512 02:30, 19 August 2021 (UTC)
Mary is named in her father's will, which was written 20 Apr 1824.[15]
Her father's entry on Find A Grave indicates that her family called her Polly, which is a common nick-name for Mary.
Her husband's will was written in 1866 and witnessed by I G Dalrymple, prior to them being admitted to Salem Presbyterian Church. It was probated in 1872 and indicates Mary was still living at that time. A James Dalrymple swore to the authenticity of the handwriting and signatures.
A death record located on family search indicates Mary's death date as 1868[16] however, the image is of the date she was admitted to the Church, not the Death Register and is likely a transcription error. Crawford-15512 01:10, 19 August 2021 (UTC)
