Biography

Mary Virginia Dalton was born in Jackson County, Missouri in August 7, 1842. Her father Robert Renick Dalton was descended from Capt Robert Renick, a prominent founder in Virginia, who was massacred by the Indians. Her mother's family, the Simmermans were also prominent founders of the Dallas, Texas area.

Her son, William Houston Norman, told the story about how his father (Thomas Norman) asked Mary Virginia to marry him: He rode up on his horse in his boots and hat, and asked her to marry him. Mary Virginia told him that he must go home and get dressed properly as a gentleman before he asked her hand in marriage. Of course, he rode home, put on dress clothes, and then proposed.^[1]

When Mary Virginia Dalton passed away in Ashland, Oregon, she had 34 grandchildren.

Pioneer, 90 Passes Away Mrs. M. B. Riley Mourns death of Mother, Grandma Norman Mrs. Mary V. Norman, well known Ashland resident, died shortly before midnight, Monday November 14, 1938, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. B. Riley, with whom she had made her home for 30 years. Mrs. Norman, better known as Grandma Norman to her many friends, was born in Johnson County, Missouri in 1842, coming to Oregon 24 years ago. Though in ill health for a number of years, and for the past three years unable to leave her bed, Grandma Norman, 90 years of age at the time of her passing was always kind and generous and greatly loved by all who knew her. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Riley, with whom she has made her home, and one other daughter, Mrs. Myra Burke, Oakland, California, three sons, G. R. Norman, Percell, Oklahoma, J. F. Norman, Weed, California, and W. H. Norman, Phoenix, Arizona. Mrs. Norman has been faithful and devoted member of the Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be held at the Riley home 141 High Street, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev H. T. Mitchelmore will be in charge of the services. Requests have been made that no flowers be sent but instead a verse of scripture or a note of sympathy will be appreciated. H. C. Stock is in charge of arrangements.^[15]
