Biography

Samuel Dalton b 1738, Albemarle, VA, son of Samuel Dalton Sr and Ann Dandridge Redd, d 2 Feb 1789, Beaver Island, Rockingham, NC. He married Charlotte Gallahue 29 Sep 1767, Pittsylvania, VA, daughter of William Gallahue and Anne Kenner.^[1]

Samuel Junior stayed in Pittsylvania County until around 1771 when he received a land grant in Guilford County, North Carolina. Before 1785 Samuel was declared insane and incapable of transferring property.

According to his grandson Robert Hunter Dalton, Samuel was in the habit of preaching a sermon at the same hour every day near an oak tree several yards from his house. A couple of sources state that he died at age 30 from the effects of a rattlesnake bite. The age given in this story is obviously wrong as he was close to 30 when he married, if the birth date is correct. Another legend claims he died on February 02, 1789 on the night his youngest child was born. In any event, his widow Charlotte remarried April 03, 1791.^[2]
