Nicholas Dalton b 4 Apr 1770, Rockingham, NC, d 7 Jan 1838, Beaver Island, Rockingham, NC. He married Rachel Hunter 24 Jun 1793, Rutherford, NC, daughter of James Hunter and Mary McFarland.[1]
Nicholas, son of Samuel Dalton, lived at Beaver Island, Rockingham county, North Carolina, where his father and grandfather had lived.[2]
Nicholas Dalton was born on April 4, 1770 at his grandfather's homestead in Beaver Island, Rockingham County, NC. Nicholas Dalton succeeded ownership of the homestead in Beaver Island, raised a large family of thirteen children (eight sons and five daughters) and became a successful farmer and was noted for the fine horses which he bred and trained. Handling horses was perhaps his chief enthusiasm. He also gained a reputation for much practical wisdom. He served as a magistrate for many years and as a senoir member of the justices he presided over in the Rockingham County courts. He rendered his decisions with much sage wisdom that seldom was there a reversal. The bar of Rockingham County was then very strong. [3]
He married Rachel Hunter, daughter of Col. James Hunter, one of the interesting figures of Revolutionary times. He died in 1838, leaving a fine estate.[4]
According to his grandson, Robert Hunter Dalton, writing in 1878 about his family states: “Nicholas was a large, heavy set man, about six feet tall with chestnut brown hair, blue eyes, a very fair skin and an erect and graceful carriage. He had a broad face with symmetrical features and was really quite handsome. His receding forehead was strikingly characteristic of the Daltons until even today. He cultivated rich land with a number of able hands and overseers, but he always derived more profit from another of his interests – raising horses – than from anything else. His father-in-law, James Hunter, gave him a fine, dark bay mare called ‘Gospel’ from the colts of which for 15-20 years he realized a handsome annual income. His knowledge and judgement in regard to horses was truly remarkable.
His house was a place of refuge and pleasure for a large circle of friends and relations who lived in different parts of the surrounding county, and whenever they came in numbers, especially at Christmas, there was music, dancing and general merrymaking and good fellowship.
