John was born about 1754 in Pittsylvania, Virginia Colony.
On December 6, 1770, John Dalton purchased 270 acres from James Mackan (of Middlesex County) in exchange for £25 Virginia currency. The tract begins at a white oak sapling running northeasterly to a red oak, northeasterly to a white oak sapling, then easterly to a white oak, then westerly to a black jack, then easterly to a white oak, then southwesterly along a branch to a white oak, then northwesterly to a red oak, and northwesterly back to the beginning. James Mackan signed, sealed, and delivered the deed in the presence of James Flannagan, Ralph Smith, and John Fowler. All three witnesses acknowledged the deed March 28, 1771, at a court held for Pittsylvania County. It was recorded by William Tunstall, Clerk of Pittsylvania County.[1]
He married Mary Ann Flannagan August 13, 1773 in Pittsylvania, Virginia.
Issue:
He passed away in 1833 in Sumner, Tennessee, United States.
John “Flanagan” Dalton’s son James “Flanagan” last appeared unambiguously on the Pittsylvania County VA tax list in 1812, the same year as his father. James Dalton appeared on the 1820[2], 1830[3], and 1840[4] Sumner County censuses, in the latter two living among John Flanagan’s other sons. He died c1842-43[5]. My research cannot currently identify an 1847 Carroll County VA death for a James Dalton. The confusion may be with James “Spike” Dalton, s/o John “Spike” Dalton. James “Spike” is followed in Winston Dalton’s Register where Winston follows both the children of John “Spike” Dalton and of John “Flanagan” Dalton. James “Spike” first appeared in Grayson (later Carroll) County in the 1824 tax list and his sons Larkin (1827) and Matthew (1829) appeared on Grayson tax lists shortly thereafter. James “Spike” appeared in the 1850 Carroll County census[6], so he didn’t die in 1847.
Robert, s/o John “Flanagan” may be a year older than James. He appeared on the Pittsylvania lists as his own tithe (thus, majority age) in 1796, a year earlier than James “Flanagan” first appeared. He likely married Tabitha Hall in Bedford County VA in 1806[7]. He died in Sumner County TN in 1843[8].
Aseneth, d/o John “Flanagan” Dalton, m. Richard Bennett in Pittsylvania County in 1795[9]. She may have been born before 1777 since no consent of her parents was indicated on the marriage bond underwritten by her father. Winston Dalton reported her death date as 24 Jan 1820[10]. It is noteworthy that another Richard Bennett married a Nancy Dalton, s/o John, in 1799, but this probably was not a daughter of John “Flanagan” but another of the Johns in Pittsylvania at the time. No record known that lists Aseneth as having a middle name Nancy.
Son Booker Dalton died in Aug 1849 of conjunctive fever. His age was reported to be 60 at time of death, indicating birth in 1789[11]. He was a veteran of the War of 1812[12]. The Booker Dalton who died in the Mexican War in 1846 was the s/o Robert Dalton above.
Winston Dalton married Seneth Pullen in 1799 in Bedford County VA[13]. He kept a register of the life events of many people in the neighborhood in Pittsylvania County including various branches of the Daltons. He did not die in 1831. He is in the 1840 Pittsylvania County VA census[14]. In 1845, Samuel Berger first paid support for Anny Dalton, who likely was Winston’s widow, Ceney. This would indicate Winston’s death near that date[15]. The Ceney living with her daughter Winney and listed as a pauper in the 1850 census was probably her[16].
William Sims Dalton was not a s/o John “Flanagan.” He was the son of John Anderson Dalton and Lucy Sims, born in Albemarle County before this parents moved to Rutherford County NC in 1785 with his grandfather David. His father was a Revolutionary War Veteran and filed for a pension explaining his journey[17]. William Sims Dalton moved on to Lawrence County TN where he lived most of his life and died about 1842. He never went to AL.
John and Mary Ann Flanagan Dalton also had a son John, named John Robert, who served as one of the executors in his father’s will[18]. John Robert was born between 1784 and 1790[19] in Pittsylvania County VA. He married Frankey Witcher in Pittsylvania County on 19 Feb 1810[20]. After his move to Sumner County TN, Frankey died and he married Elizabeth Wooten on 5 Mar 1824 in Sumner County[21]. They moved to Wilson County TN before the 1840 census[22], to Henry County TN before the 1850 census[23], then to Dunklin County MO before the 1860 census[24]. He probably died there before 1870, when Elizabeth was living with their son Samuel[25].
Research by Jim Klumpp and others
Pittsylvania County VA authorities needed to have a way of differentiating three John Daltons of about the same age in county records. The result is that this John was identified as "John Flanagan" or "John Flan" in the lists of tithes and other records. The name probably just derived from his marriage to Mary Ann Flanagan, or perhaps from the fact that his land was purchased from her father James. There is no record that this was a middle name at birth.
