Biography

Joseph, son of James Daniel and Sarah Unknown, was b. about 1759 at Granville County, North Carolina, and died before May 1819 at Granville Co, NC, when his will was proved.[1]

His will dated 18 Feb 1819 at Granville Co, NC, and proved May court, mentioned his wife Nelly, daughter Salley Key, daughter Elinor Key, daughter Polley Smith, daughter Eliza Daniel, son John Daniel, John Daniel Sr, son Sephas Daniel (under 21), and grandsons William and Richard Daniel sons of Chesley Daniel. Executors were his wife, Jacquelin Wiggins, Thomas and John Daniel.[1]

Circa 1780, Joseph probably had a first wife who was mother of the children born before 1801. He married second on 17 Oct 1801, at Prince Edward County, VA, Nelly NELSON. He may have had as many as 12 children, but only 6 were named in his will. Children (birth dates and mothers uncertain):[1]

Joseph was called son Joseph by the will of James DANIEL dated on 10 Oct 1785 at Granville County, North Carolina, USA.[1][3]

The 1790 census shows Joseph living in Granville NC.[4] He was a farmer and ran a distillery.

The 1800 census of Granville County listed Joseph Dannel with 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 26-44, 2 females under 10, 1 female 26-44, and 16 slaves.[5]

The 1810 census of Granville County listed Joseph Daniel with 2 males under 10, 2 males 16-25, 1 male 45+, 3 females under 10, 1 female 16-25, 2 females 26-44, 1 female 45+, and 13 slaves.[6]
