Biography

The Daniels repeatedly used the same names so some of the families ran into each other. Records support the identity of this James as son of James and Jane (Hicks) Daniels of Albemarle Co VA. He should not be confused with James Daniel-592.

30 Nov 1772, Granville Co NC — marriage bond of James Daniel and Sally Cocke.

1 May 1780, Granville Co NC — James was granted 98 acres on the Tar River, Persons Corner, Allins line, Daniels line, sponsored by Richard Caswell. On the 1780 taxroll James is listed directly before Thomas Person and William Allin.

Jul 1787, Caswell Co NC — James was a member of the Flat River Primitive Baptist Church.

1800 census, Hillsborough, Person Co NC listed Jas Daniel with 1 male under 10 (George), 1 male 10-16 (John), 3 males 16-26 (William, Elijah, Lewis), 1 male 45+ (himself), 3 females under 10 (dau, Susan, Sally, Margaret), 2 females 10-16 (Jane, Elizabeth), 1 female 26-45 (wife Sally) and 14 slaves.

1810 census, Person Co NC listed James Daniel 2 males under 16-25 (John, George), 1 male 26-44 (Lewis), 1 male 45+ (himself), 1 female under 10 (Margaret), 2 females 10-15 (Susan, Sally), 1 female 45+ (wife Sally), and 9 slaves.

James Daniel-1482 and James Daniel-592 have different dates, parents, wives, and children. This one (#1482) was the s/o James and Jane (Hicks) Daniel of Albemarle Co VA and husband of Sally Cocke. His children were William, Elijah, Lewis, John, Jane, Elizabeth, George, Susan, Sally, and Margaret. The other one (#592) was s/o John and Anne (Williams) Daniel of York Co VA whose will was dated 10 Oct 1785. His wife was Sarah (—) and their children were Mary, Joseph, Reuben, John, Ann, Elizabeth, Williams, Richard, and Nancy Ann.
