BIOGRAPHY

1776 Project
Lieutenant James Daniel III served with 9th North Carolina Regiment, Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Son of James Daniel, Jr. (1704-1761) and Elizabeth Woodson (1703-1756). DOB also given as 1725, 1728, 1730, or 1731. POB also given as Middlesex Co, VA. POD also given as Halifax, Halifax Co, NC.[1][2]

James Daniel III married Elizabeth West (1735-1800) in 1760 in NC. They had five children: Nehemiah (1760-1820); John West (1765-1814); Ephraim (1770-?); Shepherd (1774-1844).

NB: Shepherd Daniel (1774-1844), the son of James Daniel III and Elizabeth West is often confused with his nephew, Shepherd Daniel (1792-1844), the son of John West Daniel (1765-1814).

Military Service

James Daniel III saw service as a lieutenant in the 1st Battalion of Volunteers under Col. Abraham Sheppard in aid to South Carolina [in 1776]. He subsequently served as a lieutenant in Capt. Joseph John Wade's Company, 9th North Carolina Regiment, Continental Line, commanded by Col. John Williams. He was commissioned on 28 Nov 1776 and resigned in Nov 1777, just before the Continental Army took up winter quarters at Valley Forge, PA, The 9th North Carolina Regiment, Continental Line, was raised at Halifax, Halifax Co, NC, on 16 Sep 1776, and was disbanded on 1 Jun 1778 at Valley Forge. The 9th North Carolina Regiment of the Continental Line participated in the Battle of Brandywine (11 Sep 1777) and Germantown (4 Oct 1777). Presumably, Lt. James Daniel III took part in those battles.

Note: Neither Lt. James Daniel III nor his supposed company commander, Capt. Joseph John Wade, appear in Francis Bernard Heitman, Historical Register of Officers of the Continental Army during the War of the Revolution, April, 1775, to December, 1783, April, 1775, To December, 1783 (Washington: 1893).

Daniel-3666 and Daniel-496 appear to represent the same person because: Despite difference in dates (not unusual) Daniel-496 and Daniel-3666 represent the same person. Same father; same children; etc. Note that Daniel-3666 is much more complete than the lower numbered Daniel-496.
