Biography

Harriet Jane "Hattie" Darling was born in 1839 in Calais, Washington County, Maine to Timothy Darling and Lucy Sargent. She was their oldest daughter.

Hattie Darling was the second wife of Samuel Otis Johnson. The couple married 2 July 1862 in Hudson, New York. They had children George Roberts Johnson, Harriet Darling Johnson, Katherine Dunlop Johnson, and Mary Emily Dunlop Johnson.

Hattie was widowed in 1887. She moved to New Jersey about 1890 - and appeared in the 1900 US Census living with son, George, in Bayonne, New Jersey. She subsequently lived with her daughter, Harriet Darling Johnson Holran, in Englewood, New Jersey. In 1930, she was residing with her granddaughter, Mary, and Mary's husband, Thomas Welch.

Harriet Jane Darling Johnson died in January 1932 - most likely in New Jersey - at 92 years of age. She was buried in Brookside Cemetery, Englewood, New Jersey where her daughter Mary Emily Dunlop MacLean was interred in 1912.
