William Darling Died in Military Service during the United States Civil War.

William A. Darling, son of Emil Darling and Susan (Dodge) Darling, was born circa 1842 at New York, USA. He appeared on the census of 4 Oct. 1850 in the household of his grandparents, Reuben Daniel Dodge and Mary L. (Burling) Dodge, at Waukegan, Lake Co., Illinois.[1] He appeared on the census of 30 June 1860 in the household of Reuben Daniel Dodge at Waukegan, Lake Co., Illinois.[2]

He married Celia S. Nichols about 1862, they had at least one child, a son, William E. Darling born in 1864. William E. listed his parents names on his marriage record in 1894.[3] He registered for the Civil War draft in June 1863 at Waukegan and stated that he was married and had been born in New York.[4]

He was a corporal in the 2nd Regiment, Illinois Light Artillery, Battery M, his pension record has a date of 16 April 1864[5] William died on 13 March 1864 at Camp Butler, Springfield, Illinois[6] and was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Waukegan. His memorial has a photo of a headstone that shows he was civil war veteran.[7] Celia is also buried at Oakwood Cemetery. She died 3 March 1892, her memorial has a photo of her headstone. Her name is shown as Celias.
