Biography

William Emmet Darling is born in about 1853 in Rochester, New York State. This is where he is found in the 1855 New York State census records at the age of two. The parents are William and Betsey. In the 1865 New York State census, this same family is still in Rochester and William E is now 12-years old. He is still in Rochester with his family at the age of 22 in the state census of 1875. This 1875 census record, while difficult to read, shows his occupation as something like “brakeman.” The US federal census of 1880 confirms some of this as now the occupation is clearly shown as a “Brakeman R. R.” and the middle name is now shown in full as “Emmet.” William is still living at home.

On December 21, 1887 William marries Mary Elizabeth Paterson (1856-1937) in Ingersol, Ontario. Canada.

The marriage did not last long as William dies in 1889. He is buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester.
