Biography

Life story

Henry Darnall was born in England in 1645, the son of Philip Darnall, a London barrister. Darnall was the first of his family to emigrate to America, and arrived in Maryland by c.1680, when he was granted a tract of 236 acres in what was then Calvert County.[1] In Maryland he became a substantial landholder and slaveholder, and married Eleanor Hatton Brooke (1642–1725), the widow of Thomas Brooke, Sr., who had died in 1676.[2]

Through his daughter Mary (Darnall) Carroll (abt.1678-1742) he became the great grandfather of Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. His cousin Mary (Darnall) Calvert (abt.1630-) was married to Charles Calvert (1637-1715), the Third Lord Baltimore.[3]

Col. Henry Darnall (1645–1711), a wealthy Maryland Roman Catholic planter, Proprietary Agent of Charles Calvert, 3rd Baron Baltimore and, for a time, Deputy Governor of Maryland. However, during the Protestant Revolution of 1689, Darnall's proprietarial army was defeated by the Puritan army of Colonel John Coode, and he was stripped of his numerous offices.[4]

Henry Darnall I, Lord Baltimore's principal defender during the tumultuous days of Maryland's revolution in government, lived for many years in Prince George's County before moving late in life to Anne Arundel County. His most important estate here was the Woodyard, a lumbering facility as well as a tobacco plantation. He also owned Portland Manor in Anne Arundel County. Wealthier by far than most Prince Georgeans, at his death he owned more than one hundred slaves (116) and counted among his possessions five wigs, eleven pairs of gloves, and a cloth suit trimmed with gold (from the Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore, Maryland).

Regarding his wife Eleanor Hatton... She came to the Province in 1649 with her widowed mother and family. Her first husband had been Major Thomas BROOKE of Brookefield. Both of her husbands were wealthy men. Three of Eleanor Hatton's sons by Major Thomas Brooke became Jesuit priests. Another, Colonel Thomas Brooke became a Protestant, and as president of the governor's council, served as acting governor of Maryland in 1720.

Darnall's Chance Residence

1703: Colonel Henry Darnall receives the patent for a 7,000 acre land grant from his relative by marriage Charles Calvert, the third Lord Baltimore. The 7,000 acre tract of land is named "His Lordship's Kindness" in recognition of Lord Baltimore's generosity. Darnall, who lived at the nearby "Woodyard" as well as at "Darnall's Chance" in Upper Marlboro, was a very wealthy gentleman and held many offices, including Proprietary Agent and Receiver General, one of the most lucrative positions in the provincial government of Maryland. His total land holdings in Prince George's County covered approximately 10% (27,000 acres) of the present area of the county.[10]

1711: Col. Henry Darnall dies and wills most of his real estate to his son, Henry Darnall, II. By the 1720's the latter was experiencing serious financial difficulties, and in the period from 1727 to 1730 he liquidated much of his property (eventually 6,700 acres of His Lordship's Kindness, which Darnall disposed of, returned to the possession of the Calverts).[10]

When Col. Darnall died in 1711, he owned 27,000 acres (11,000 ha) in Prince George's County, as well as holdings in four other counties. The property of what became known as Darnall's Chance passed through his family to his granddaughter Eleanor Darnall, who married Daniel Carroll I in 1727. Their family was reared on the large landholding and plantation. Two Carroll sons were prominent members of colonial and early United States society: Daniel Carroll became a politician in the Continental Congress and Maryland Senate, and member of the Constitutional Convention; and John Carroll became the first Roman Catholic bishop in the United States, and founder of Georgetown University. There was likely a first wife, name unknown, who would have been the mother of Phillip. Basis for this is (1) likely birth year of Phillip was before Henry Darnall's marriage to Elinor Hatton, and (2) Philip married Eleanor Hatton Brooke, daughter of Elenor Hatton and her first husband Thomas Brooke, which would not have been allowed if they had the same mother. This first wife is also noted in Wikipedia, for example, and should be considered here.

More generally, the list of children in the Marriage section here is incomplete and confusing.

I would like to remove all the copy and paste of the wills and land deeds as I do not think these add anything substantive to the biography. Please let me know if you disagree.
I agree that some could be kept for timeline information, but the large number listed here do not add substantively to the biography.

Darnall-228 and Darnall-82 appear to represent the same person because: These two have similar information; enough to imply that they are the same person.

Darnell-433 and Darnall-82 appear to represent the same person because: The few years difference in birth dates can be handled with a note. The family was from Hertfordshire, although if Henry was a barrister in Gray's Inn, he had lived in London.
Proposed merge with Unknown and Eleanor Hatton(hatton-211) to reconcile duplicate wives
Henry Darnall was married to Eleanor Hatton, not Mary Hatton. Sent message to profile owner of Mary Hatton to verify her sources.
