Biography

Thomas was born on 23 Nov 1839 in Magnolia, Putnam, Illinois[1] or Wenona, Marshall County, Illinois.[2] as the son of Abram Darnell and Susannah Owen.

In 1850, he was 11 years of age and living in Fox Township, Kendall County, IL, with his parents and seven siblings: Benjamin Abraham Darnell (1833-1919), Elizabeth (Darnell) James (1836-abt.1910), Enoch Benjamin Darnell (1837-1916), Fanny (i.e. Frances Anna (Darnell) Neer (1842-1925)), Reuben Darnell (1843-1864),Jane Darnell (abt.1845-aft.1850), and William Darnell (1849-1899).[3]

He served during the Civil War (1861-1865) - entering service on 19 Apr 1861 in Sandwich, IL, mustering in on 29 Apr 1861 in Cairo, IL, and mustering out on 29 Jul 1861, rank of private, Company C 10th Illinois Infantry. He was described as being single, 5'8" tall with sandy hair, blue eyes, and light complexion.[4] Service records show - rank Corporal, E Company #13, IL Inf[5] He had a second enlistment on 25 Aug 1861, mustering in 25 Aug 1861, 13th infantry ; He was wounded in tje abdomin - Vicksburg, Mississippi on 30 Jun 1963; musted out 1 Jul 1863; died from his wounds.[6]

The US Civil War Draft Registry show him as age 25 and married, working as a farmer in Illinois at time of the draft.[7]

Thomas attained Corporal status prior to his death. He served on the Union side in the 13th Regiment Illinois Infantry, Co E. Rank in Private; rank out Corporal. [8]

Thomas died 2 years later on 1 Jul 1863 and was buried at Vicksburg National Cemetery in Vicksburg, Mississippi[9][10] [11]

When age 25 and at time of draft, the registry indicated he was married. WHO DID HE MARRY? Does anyone have a marriage license or marriage info?
