Biography

High Sheriff of Dorsett. The position of Sheriff was once a powerful one, the holders being responsible for collecting taxes and enforcing law and order in Somerset a county in South West England. In modern times the sheriff has become a ceremonial officer of the Crown, attending or presiding over many public events. Until 1567 the Sheriff of Somerset was also Sheriff of Dorsett.

The Daubeny family was of direct Norman descent in the male line, and the head of the South Petherton branch was successively Baron Daubeney by tenure, by writ of summons to parliament (c. 1295-1486) and by letters patent (1486-1548). The last of this line was Henry Lord Daubeney, later Earl of Bridgewater, who died without issue in 1548; his uncle and heir, James Daubeney of Wayford, never laid claim to the barony. (Records of the Daubeney family of Isleworth, including official papers and correspondence relating to the military career of Sir Charles Henry Barnston Daubeney; pedigrees and genealogical notes; and notes and illustrations concerning family history, heraldry and property. London Metropolitan Archives.)

Daubeney-33 and Daubeney-31 appear to represent the same person because: same description as High Sheriff, dates are all estimates
