Biography

William, born in Massachusetts or Connecticut in 1665, removed to Hartford with his parents, Humphrey (Sr, b. Engl, dwelled Barbados), and his wife Rachel (Holmes). Convicted of playing cards on a Sunday by the puritanical court, William was taken from his parents and awarded to a Capt Watts.[1] Disgusted with this process, the remaining family, parents and sister removed to New York City, where they felt the Dutch culture would be more liberal.[2] William later married Ann Edwards and had daughter Ann Davenport before before he d. 1742.[3]

Research Notes

The Humphrey, Rachel and WIlliam Davenport, New England by on Questor's Web Site by Sharon has significant amount of detail on Humphrey (William's supposed father) and Humphrey (William's supposed brother).

The same site also has a discussion of the DNA and other evidence on relationship between the various Humphreys and William.

Hartford County, Connecticut, County Court Minutes refers to a child "giuen unto Capt Tho. Watts as his own child or to be brought up by said Watts as his owne child." The child, son of Tho: Harris, died soon after the death of Captain Thomas Watts and the estate was sued by Thomas Harris for breach of covenant in 1684.
