William, born in Massachusetts or Connecticut in 1665, removed to Hartford with his parents, Humphrey (Sr, b. Engl, dwelled Barbados), and his wife Rachel (Holmes). Convicted of playing cards on a Sunday by the puritanical court, William was taken from his parents and awarded to a Capt Watts.[1] Disgusted with this process, the remaining family, parents and sister removed to New York City, where they felt the Dutch culture would be more liberal.[2] William later married Ann Edwards and had daughter Ann Davenport before before he d. 1742.[3]

Hartford County, Connecticut, County Court Minutes refers to a child "giuen unto Capt Tho. Watts as his own child or to be brought up by said Watts as his owne child." The child, son of Tho: Harris, died soon after the death of Captain Thomas Watts and the estate was sued by Thomas Harris for breach of covenant in 1684.
