Mary was born on 6 October 1838 in Jefferson, Richland, Ohio, United States. She was the daughter of George Davey and Eleanor Ann (Culver) Davey.^[1]

When Mary was 20 she married James Johnston McConkie on 22 September 1859 in Richland County, Ohio. The couple had 3 children: Willis Allen McConkie, Ulysses B. McConkie and Rosa May McConkie.^[2][3]
