Hi Peter

I have some new information on your immediate family. I sent you a PM, if you haven't seen it, please look in your spam folder as it might have gone there. If you answer that I can send you the information.

Thanks!

Your Watchlist has 7224 profiles. This is very large. Our systems are designed to handle 5,000. Contributing to more than 5,000 profiles is great (the community thanks you for it!) but don't feel you have to keep so many on your Watchlist. Despite the terminology, there is no shame in "orphaning" Open profiles. :-) This invites others to share responsibility. Use the Bulk Trusted List changes tool to remove yourself from some profiles.

Also, it would appear that you have a number of merges that need your attention.

Hello Peter,

I see that you are working on pre-1700 profiles such as https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Mackeinzie-1 and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Mckenzie-11032. I can see sources there, and from my experience I think (but do not know) that those sources came from ancestry.com. We need more data on those sources, because these pre-1700 profiles are important to so many descendants. At a minimum we would want members to be able to access or find the source with the information you provide, and also see a brief statement of what data is provided by that source.

Now, there are some ways to make this easier for you.

This website might be helpful: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sources

Also check out this brilliant little tool that's present on every profile sheet: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:RootsSearch

Here's a video that shows how it works; you probably need to watch just a few minutes at the start to see how to get in. https://youtu.be/_4AMVD9hsCg

Even easier, there's a browser plug-in that is really useful, called Sourcer. It will automate finding sources and pasting them in. It can even “write” the biography based on the sources; all you do is copy and paste. See the video at: https://youtu.be/_JssleDA5GQ and the text at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:WikiTree_Sourcer. This last one, Sourcer, has been a real game-changer for me. I hope you will try it. ~ Deb

Hello!

I noticed that you're working on pre-1700-era profiles. See Richard Keen (1655-abt.1693). This is just a reminder that certifying to work on these types of profiles means that you agree to add valid sources as outlined in the Pre-1700 Certification Quiz.

For pre-1700 profiles, we require more rigorous sources. (See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles#Cite_reliable_sources.) Those sources must be added at the time that you create the profile.

Please review the specific advice for England profiles at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:England_Project_Reliable_Sources.

If you need help with this, our G2G Forum is a great place to start. You can get there by clicking the link on the Help menu.

Thanks!

Hello Peter,

Thanks for creating pre-1700 profiles like George Bicknell (abt.1610-) and Johane (Allen) Bicknell (abt.1620-).

Please avoid leaving both the birth and death locations blank. For locations, our style guide says that almost any location is better than no location as locations help disambiguate similarly named people. So if you can please try to estimate the birth or death location and then explain the basis for your estimation in a = = Research Notes = = section that would be very helpful.

In the case of George, since he was married in England, it is reasonable to estimate that George was born in England.

Thanks.

Hello William,

I am reluctant to add unsourced information to Wikitree.

In this case, George was married at South Molton, Devon, and his daughter Elizabeth was baptised there, too. So we could guess that George was born at South Molton, or failing that, he was probably born in Devon. But in the absence of evidence, that's what it would be: a guess.

I quote from "Almost Any Location is Better than No Location". "The only exception would be if entering any location at all would be a guess."

Your guess is as good as mine.

Peter

posted by Peter Davies
But I expect there are some locations that would not just be a guess, but a reasonable estimate. For example, "England" sounds like a reasonable estimated location, however, I do not expect "South Molton" would be reasonable as there is no basis to be that specific.

Hi Peter,

I have sent you a private message. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards Joan (WikiTree Mentor)

Hi Peter! You added Joan Pigot as wife of Edward Bulstrode/mother of Cecily, but no sources. Sources for Edward and Cecily's profiles support their relationship, but no mention of Cecily's mother/Edward's wife. What source(s) do you have that show Joan Pigot married Edward and was Cecily's mother?

Joan Pigot: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pigot-61

Thanks!

Hi Liz, Sorry if I've messed up. I'm not sure that I fully understand your comments. Please make changes and undo what you feel I got wrong.

My source was: UK and Ireland, Find A Grave Index, 1300s-Current; Name: Lady Cecily Kellway; Cemetery: All Saints Churchyard; Burial or Cremation Place: Faringdon, Vale of White Horse District, Oxfordshire, England; Has Bio?: N; Mother: Joan Bulstrode; Spouse: Alexander Unton; Children: Elizabeth Croke; Edward Unton; Ann Harington

I had assumed that "Lady Cecily Kellway" was Cicely (Bulstrode) Unton, who apparently married Robert Keilway MP before 1553; and that Joan Bustrode was born Joan Pigot.

Please feel free to make changes as necessary to fix my mistakes.

Sorry again,

Peter Davies

FindAGrave memorials are not considered reliable sources. You'd need to cite whatever the memorial is citing. Without a link to the memorial, I can't even check to see what sources it might list. adding a spouse and/or child is considered a major change and major changes & source(s) for them should be discussed with profile manager(s). Pre-1700 profiles require reliable sources.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for creating pre-1700 profiles! Please remember to add a full source citation when you create new pre-1700 profiles. See: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles#Cite_reliable_sources and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sources#How_to_Add_Sources_to_Profiles.

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Hi Cheryl,

Currently I'm a bit overwhelmed by the feedback I'm starting to see from others. Hopefully I'll get over this and start to implement a strategy for improving upon the profiles that I initially posted. At the moment it looks like a huge task to understand how to fix things that other people have been criticizing. I'm confused and floundering, but perhaps I'll work out where to start, soon.

Hi Peter! Pre-1700 profiles need better source citations than the ones you're using to create profiles for the extended Rose family. Could you provide details about the source please? For example, instead of
  • England, Select Marriages, 1538–1973
  • Ancestry trees

include a fuller citation of what the source for the entry from "Select Marriages" was and perhaps a link for the Ancestry tree that would allow Ancestry members to look (although a link to an Ancestry tree is not an acceptable source for a pre-1700 profile, "Ancestry trees" with a link is better than just "Ancestry trees").

I'm not a member of Ancestry, so I'm not familiar with how to cite something from the Select Marriage database, but I'm sure others would be happy to help if you posted to G2G. William Foster also offered some good advice yesterday in his comment.

Cheers, Liz

Hi Peter,

Thanks for creating pre-1700 profiles like Susan (Jackson) Cloughe (abt.1583-), Thomas Cloughe (abt.1577-), and Thomas Skynner (abt.1565-).

Per our community guidelines, all pre-1700 profiles must be sourced and Ancestry trees are not sources in and of themselves, although, they often contain sources if you dig into them.

I see many other pre-1700 profiles that you created (e.g., Margarett (Philip) Collyer (bef.1582-abt.1657)) that do list sources, so please continue that work and return to the above profiles and any others you have created to fill in the missing sources. I would request on these that you elaborate further on your sources though. Since you have located the source, apparently on Ancestry, it would be very helpful to link to the source and/or transcribe key information from the source. I updated Margarett (Philip) Collyer to provide an example for you. I used templates, but that is not necessary, just helpful if they work for you.

If you are having trouble finding sources, please turn to one of our projects, for example, the England Project can likely help you with sourcing.

Going forward, please do not create any pre-1700 profiles unless you have at least one source to document the person.

Let me know if you need help or have questions on any of this.

Thanks.

Hi William,

Thank you for your detailed comments on my attempts to share information from my Ancestry.com efforts with the wider Wikitree community.

Your example of Margarett (Philip) Collyer is extremely helpful, but even trying to emulate it once seems like a daunting task. You mention that you used templates, but I'm not sure what that means or how to do it. Is it a way of coping with the formatting of sources?

Hi Peter,

Yes, the learning curve can seem daunting, but I assure you, it is easier than it appears.

I'm happy to do a Zoom screen share with you over the weekend. Send me a private message so I get your email and we can schedule a time where I can give you a hand-on tutorial which makes some of this stuff much easier.

Thanks.

Hi William,

I'd be very happy to receive a Zoom tutorial from you at some time this weekend. Thank you!

I have dipped my toe into the challenge ahead of me by trying to flush out the sources for Philips-1697, who is Margarett's father. I was able to replicate most of the information by copying and pasting Ancestry records and then inserting colons, semi-colons and spaces. However, as you will see, I couldn't find out how to locate the Ancestry Record numbers, so I have:

See also:

  • Buckinghamshire, England, Extracted Church of England Parish Records, 1535-1812; Ancestry.com; Name: John Phillips; Gender: Male; Event Type: Marriage; Marriage Date: 15 Apr 1578: Marriage Place: Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, England; Spouse: Margaret.

which after saving looks like:

See also:

Buckinghamshire, England, Extracted Church of England Parish Records, 1535-1812; Ancestry.com; Name: John Phillips; Gender: Male; Event Type: Marriage; Marriage Date: 15 Apr 1578: Marriage Place: Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, England; Spouse: Margaret.

Can you help me to find the Ancestry Record numbers?

I'd also like to understand how you chose the Ancestry Tree you have entered (for Margarett) as

This is the first of about six such trees for Margarett on Ancestry.com. It happens to be the first one. Is that why you chose it? Could there be a case for selecting a different one, or perhaps more than one?

Thanks again for all your help!

Hello Peter,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

I’m going to suggest that the England project might fit your current research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Please take your time. Accuracy is so much more important than speed on WikiTree. And please add locations, dates, and at least one reliable source to each profile, particularly any pre-1700s profile, before you leave it. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Have questions? Ask in the comments section of my profile.
