Biography

John was born in 1799 in Harrison County, Virginia (in present day West Virginia), the son of John Davis and Marvel Maxson. He grew up there and in 1818 at the age of 19, he married the 14 year old Parmelia Maxson in Harrison County. They settled to farm in Harrison County for many years, beginning a family that would number x children. Beginning in the late 1830s, the family became nomadic, which may have been related to John also becoming a preacher of the United Brethren[1]. They moved first to Ohio to farm [probably in Johnston, Champaign County] by 1840 and in 1842, John was the minister who performed his eldest son's marriage. By 1850, the family had moved on to Green in Shelby County, Ohio. Six years later in 1856, they were living in DeWitt in Clinton County, Iowa near other family members. Four years later in 1860, they were living in the Avon area in Coffey County in the Kansas Territory. At some point during the Civil War, they moved to Hallock in Peoria County, Illinois where their sons had relocated. Finally in the 1870s, the couple moved to back to Kansas to Pardee in Atchison County. His wife Parmelia died there in 1879. John died of old age the following year in 1880 in Mount Pleasant Township also in Atchison County at the age of 80.
