Mary was born in 1779 in Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey, the daughter of Nathan Davis and Ann Gifford. The family was part of the Seventh Day Baptist (SDB) church community in Shrewsbury. In early 1790s, Mary's family followed other members of the SDB community to settle in western Virginia, initially stopping in White Day Creek there (between present day Fairmont and Morgantown, West Virginia), but continuing on in 1792 to help establish the town of New Salem in Harrison County and the surrounding area (which would become part of the new State of West Virginia in 1863). The young Zebulon Maxson Jr was taken with her and declared that he would wait for her to grow up to marry her. And when she was 17 years old In 1796, they did indeed marry in Harrison County. They settled to farm in the Greenbrier area just southwest of Salem (in the area that today is Doddridge County, West Virginia), and raised a family of ten children, one of whom died in infancy. Zebulon was also a basket and broom maker. They were very active in the SDB church established in Salem and in 1801 Zebulon was ordained to preach in the church. He performed the marriage ceremonies for two of their daughters in 1818. Zebulon passed away in 1821 in Harrison County,. Mary remarried thirteen years later in 1834 to the widower Nimrod Frazier (also spelled Frasier, Freasure or Frashure). Nimrod died in 1839. By 1850, Mary was living with her son Gideon's family in the same area, now part of Doddridge County. She died in 1868 in Greenbrier Run at the age of 88 and is buried at the Seventh-Day Baptist Church Cemetery in Salem, West Virginia.

It is said that Rev. Zebulon Maxson, Jr., was living at Salem when Mary came there with her parents at the age of eleven years or thereabout. Upon being advised to marry a certain popular girl he answered no. I am going to wait for Mary Davis to grow up and marry her, which he did. He was ordained deacon about 1774, and to the ministry in 1800.

Untriangulated DNA Match
Researcher Randolph-1145 has identified an autosomal DNA segment which may have passed from Nathan Davis to Mary, and from Mary to her son John Maxson. The segment has been confirmed as passing from Nathan Davis to Mary's descendant Alva Fitz Randolph by a triangulated group consisting of Thomas Fitz Randolph (GED kit M011134), Lucy Hansen (23andme) and Robert Lee Carson (GEDmatch kit M085143) sharing a 18.4 cM segment on chromosome 20 from 21,000,000 to 29,000,000, with Thomas William Davis (1719-1795) and Tacy Crandall (1721-1795) identified as the most recent common ancestors. However, the segment could have passed from Nathan Davis to Alva either via Nathan's daughter Ann (Davis) Brown to Alva's father Asa or via Mary to Alva's mother Marvel. Additional triangulation will be required to confirm which line the segment passed through (or both).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:
