Captain William Davis served with Cheraws District Regiment, South Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.
A Find A Grave: Memorial #59499063 has some narrative about this William's participation in the American Revolutionary War, but additional records suggest that he also served in the War of 1812[1][2][3][4][5] The FindAGrave site also provides a few details about his family constellation. Such memorials are not primary sources.
Service: Captain South Carolina Volunteer Co, St David Parish, Colonel Gabriel G Powell. [6]
For example, that he married Susan Mary Dunham about 1768. They may have had as many as 13 children (enumerated on FamilySearch).

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
Y-chromosome DNA test-takers in his direct paternal line on WikiTree:
Davis-30861 and Davis-15747 are not ready to be merged because: These appear to be the same person. I wonder if someone can do a bit more research here as some of the details differ a bit.
Davis-30861 and Davis-15747 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same father, same birth year. Probably some of the wives are wrong.
Davis-20741 and Davis-15747 appear to represent the same person because: One of these profiles is missing a mother, and one missing a father, but they share a sibling, Mary Ann (Davis) Dunnam, who is the daughter of one William's father and the other William's mother. Seems at least plausible that this is the same William double-entered.
