John Edward was known as Jack for most of his life. He had a difficult childhood that he found difficult to talk about. His mother, Ellen died when he was aged 6. When he was 9 his father then remarried . In 1923 when John was 14 his father then also died. John and his brother Tom soon after left the family home. His step mother herself remarried in 1933.

The details as reported are as follows: DAVIS Suddenly, at the CGH, John Edward (Jack) aged 83 years, the dearly loved husband of Ada Davis, of Meir much loved dad of Gordon and Malcolm, dear father in law of Doris and Ruth, devoted granddad of Sandra, Paul, Earl and Elizabeth, and loving great granddad of Benjamin, Kimberley, Samantha and Adam, a dear brother of Tom and the late Harry and Ethel.
