Baxter Davis, the son of W. Baxter Davis and Amelia Hopkins was born Mecklenburg County, Virginia, on 3 November 1772.[1] He died at Owensboro, Kentucky, on 11 October 1839.[2]
In Granville County, North Carolina, a marriage bond was issued on 4 September 1801 for the pending marriage of Baxter Davis to Mary Webb. [3] A marriage license was issued in Granville County on 28 September 1801,[4] and the marriage was consummated on 1 October 1801.[5]
Various records of Granville County, North Carolina, indicate that both father and son were known as "Baxter Davis." To differentiate between the two, the appendage "Jr" or "Sr" was frequently applied. On 26 February 1807, the last record is found in Granville County in which Baxter Davis, Jr., is identified.[6] In it, his father, Baxter Davis , Sr., of Granville County, North Carolina, sold 600 acres to John Speed of Mecklenburg County, Virginia, "it being same tract of land whereon the said Baxter Davis [Sr.] now lives including that part on which Baxter Davis, Jr., now lives." It seems likely that the selling of this property coincided with the removal of Baxter Davis to Kentucky.
In the 1810 census Baxter was in Daviess County, Kentucky.[7]
In the 1820 census for Daviess County, it is impossible to make out the first name of may of the Davises enumerated, but Baxter appears again in the 1830 census for Daviess County.[8]
Baxter Davis was of Daviess County, Kentucky, when he made his will on 11 September 1839.[9] In it, he names sons William H., Thomas W., Baxter B., James W. (deceased) & John (deceased), and his daughters Amelia H. Overall, Francis Young Ramsey, Polly Ann Ramsey & Rachel W. Overall. Names Patricia A. Brown, daughter in law. He names the children of his deceased sons, i.e., William, Baxter, Mary, John, James, Fletcher, and Leonidas Davis. The will was recorded in the November Term of the Daviess County court, and his son, Thomas W. Davis was confirmed as executor for Baxter's estate on 9 February 1839.[10]
Baxter and Mary (Webb) Davis had the following children:
All records indicate that his name was Baxter Davis (not William Baxter Davis or W. Baxter Davis). These is some evidence that his father may have been W. Baxter Davis (none to support William Baxter Davis).[12]

↑Space:Some Migratory Davises and Their Connections, page 7. Nov 3 1773 is the date given by Dr. Robert Dickins Webb in his book, "The Webb Family," 1894, and also the date given in a letter from Rev. A. G. Davis to J. W. Ramsey, 1893, although an old family Bible in my [Richard E. Davis]
possession gives the year of birth as 1772. He was the son of W. Baxter Davis and Amelia Hopkins, who are mentioned as living in Mecklenburgh County, Va., by deed dated 1789, and as living in Granville County, N. C, by deed dated 1790. Prior to that, by deed dated 1757, W. Baxter Davis is mentioned as living in Lunenburgh County, Va. The family Bible mentioned above states that Baxter Davis, (Jr.) was born in North Carolina, but above-mentioned deeds indicate that he must have been born in Mecklenburgh County, Va. There was some confusion in early days as to the line between Virginia and North Carolina, and many people who thought they lived in Virginia found that they resided in North Carolina after the line was surveyed. That fact may account for the seeming confusion in the record.

Baxter Davis is not known, as neither father nor son used the initial W. in deeds or other records now extant. The only record that I have found which uses the initial regarding the father is the will of Dr. James Hopkins, youngest son of Dr. Arthur Hopkins, who specified that certain legacies for his nieces and nephews should be paid into the hands of his brother-in-law, W. Baxter Davis."
