Biography

John Davis immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

John Davis, son of Dolor and Margery, born in England about 1626. He came to New England in April 1635. Apparently his mother, sister Mary age 4 and John age 9, were passengers on the Elizabeth, arriving a year after his father Dolar Davis. [1] [2][3]

He married on March 15, 1648 in Barnstable, Hannah, daughter of Robert Lynnell of Barnstable. [1] [4][5]

He was one of the first settlers at Barnstable, a farmer and a house carpenter by trade. [3] [1]

  • 1643: Able to bear arms at Barnstable. [3]
  • 1649: October 15: Deed to an 8 acre house lot on Baker's Lane (later Hyannis Rd.) [3]
  • 1656: 71: 72: 75: 77: Surveyor of highways. [1]
  • 1657: Took the oath of fidelity at Barnstable. [1]
  • He accumulated substantial additional land holdings including: 13 acres east on Hyannis Rd.; 5 acres on both sides of Hyannis Rd.; 3 acres in the old common field; 2 acres in the new common field; an acre opposite his house that he improved with an orchard; 4 acres of meadow and Sandy Neck; 2 additional acres bounded by Rendevous Creek. [3]
  • His father Dolar bequeathed him his house, barn and other parcels of land in Concord in his will of Sept. , 1672. [1]
  • Additionally, John's name appears frequently in Barnstable town records in connection with real estate transactions and negotiations with Indians. [1]
  • 1682: On grand inquest, he owned considerable real estate at various places and settled portions of it on his sons during his own life. [1]

His will is dated May 10, 1701, and speaks of his wife as living, also of sons John, Benjamin, Samuel, Dollar, Timothy, and Jabez, of daughters Mercy, Ruth Lynnell, and Mary Hincley ; also of Hannah Jones's five children, son John's four eldest sons, granddaughter Mary Goodspeed, and grandson Joseph Davis. Will proved April 9, 1703. Amount of inventory, £268 12s. 4:d.[1] (Vol. 2: p. 137-8)[6]

He died at Barnstable in 1703.

This person immigrated to New England between 1621-1640 as a Minor Child (under age 21 at time of immigration) of a Puritan Great Migration immigrant who is profiled in Robert Charles Anderson's Great Migration Directory (or is otherwise accepted by the Puritan Great Migration (PGM) Project).

Please feel free to improve the profile(s) by providing additional information and reliable sources. I have noticed that someone removed the child Nicholas Davis from the parents of Dolor Davis and Margery Willard. I have received and uploaded,

under the child, John Davis, an image of Children born to Dolor Davis and Margery Willard in England, sent to me by Michael R. Paulick. On this image is listed from the the Baptismal Records of Bexhill the following: "Nicholas, son of Dolor Davie was baptized" with a date of 01 Feb 1628/29. Also on this image is the following: Michael R. Paulick & Dr. Frank "Mike" Davis, "Dolor and Margery (Willard) Davis, New Discoveries in England", 193-198, Rhode Island Roots, Journal of the Rhode Island Genealogical Society, Vol. 47, Dec 2021.

Dee, this was done back in 2015 following a discussion on G2G https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/204985/dolar-davis-pgm-remove-parents-remove-son-nicholas

You will see that in June, in a comment just below the original thread, Mike Davis said he had found proof that Nicholas was son of Dolor and was going to re-add Nicholas. I have no idea why that didn't happen at the time.

It looks like this https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Davis-188 is Nicholas profile and it seems that he should be re-attached. It will require a PGM leader to do that; you can now consider them notified. Thanks for checking in on this profile.

The continuing conversation on the G2G thread has been hidden now because it contained a link to a commercial book sale location, but it includes a post by Mike Davis claiming that while this baptismal record does establish that Dolor Davies had a son named Nicholas, it is not Nicholas Davis (bef.1629-1672) who emigrated to America. Davis says he conducted extensive research in England on this family, as Nicholas (Davis-188) is his direct ancestor. He was unable to find any document referring to the Bexhill Nicholas Davis after 1629, so it is unclear whether he emigrated to America and may have died young. This possibility is also supported by the fact that there is no Nicholas named in Dolor's will. According to Davis, the Barnstable/Newport Nichols (Davis-188) was likely a descendant of Dolor’s father, grandfather, or great grandfather, based on DNA testing, but not his son.

Dee, Mike Davis requested that we remove the page that had been posted to Davis profiles so per his request I did that. Hopefully he will contribute additional updates to Davis profiles to enrich our knowledge of this family.

Also, per Mike's public comments posted on geni.com and elsewhere, his last statement on this topic was that he believed that Nicholas the immigrant was related to Dolor Davis, possibly a cousin, but did not seem to be his son. On that basis, it would be inappropriate to re-attach the existing Davis-188 (the immigrant) as a son of Dolor but perhaps we need a new Nicholas to match the 1629 christening.
