William Davis was born on January 7, 1765 in Orange County, Virginia. He was the son of Jonathan Davis and Lucy Gibbs. At the age of 16, his service began in the Revolutionary War. He enlisted as a private serving under General Lafayette. He was shot in the forehead during his service, and also received the General's Powder Horn as a gift for his bravery during the war.[1]
William also became a Baptist Minister, becoming ordained first in Virginia in 1788, and then in Georgia in 1793. A year after becoming ordained, he married Nancy Easton in Orange County, Virginia.[2] They had 12 children together, and three of them became preachers.
