Richard was born in 1845, the third child of James Davis and Caroline Iselton. He was born at Kaikohe in Northland, New Zealand.
It is recorded on his Marriage certificate and the birth records of his sons, that he was employed as a surveyor in the Bay of Islands. At the age of 24 he married Rose Mary Coney at St John the Baptist Church at Waimate North, New Zealand on 28th October 1869.
They had four sons:
Charles Maurice (b. 1870)
Arthur St John (b. 1872)
Lawrence Montgomery (b. 1873)
Percy Coleman (b. 1875).
The two eldest boys are recorded as being born at Waimate North, and the two youngest as being born at Russell.
His wife Rose Mary died on 5th July 1877 of Pneumonia and a condition of the heart. Richard himself died of Tuberculosis of the lungs less than two years later, on 8th February 1879.[1] They are buried together in the Mount Victoria cemetery at Devonport, Auckland. [Anglican Row A7, Plot 43? or plot 261]. The Headstone (which is no longer there) read:
Sacred to the Memory of Mary,
wife of R.C Davis
died 5th July 1877
aged 39 years.
'We love Him because He first loved us'
DEATHS
DAVIS - on February 8th at his residence, North Shore, Richard C. Davis the beloved son of James and Caroline Davis aged 33 years.[2]
