Biography

Jane was born in 1827 in Harrison County, Virginia (that would become part of Doddridge County when it was formed in 1844 and part of West Virginia from 1863). She was the daughter of David D. Davis and Anna Davis. She grew up on the family farm on Buckeye Run in the Morgansville area between Salem and West Union. In 1849 at the age of 22, she married Isaac Cooper Williams there in Doddridge County. They settled to farm near West Union, raising a family of ten children, two of whom died young. After her husband Isaac died, Jane remarried in 1895 to the widower Henry F. Meek in Doddridge County. She was past her child-bearing years, so they did not have any children together. Henry died give years later in 1900. By 1910, Jane had joined her son and his family in DeKalb in Gilmer County. She died at some point after the 1910 census.

Research notes

There are candidate records for Jane's daughter Helen for a Helen Williams who had three children out of wedlock, working as a servant in families in Doddridge County (1900, 1910), and a Helen V Williams who married Charles S. Robbins in 1913 in Tucker County, WV, and thereafter lived in Ohio, dying there in 1951.

There are candidate records for Jane's daughter Margaret for a Margaret Melissa who married John Lemic Williams in 1888, but that Margaret is consistently born in 1867 whereas Jane's daughter was clear born about 10 years earlier in 1857 since she already appears in the 1860 census.
