Hi Kay & the rest of the PIP team,

I believe the PIP project is an important foundation stone for all Wikitree-ers.

The number of poorly sourced profiles will continue to grow as the popularity of genealogy increases and platforms such as Ancestry, Heritage, etc facilitate the spread of research errors. One of the measures that may help to reduce this problem would be to offer all new Wikitree-ers a PIP course. I'm not aware of how big a task this would be and maybe a more basic introductory PIP would be needed, but the potential impact on future profiles would be significant.

Dear Alan,

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing a check-in with project members. Please review the following and respond to let us know that you are content with your current team or if you would like to be more involved.

We are no longer using the PIP graduate category. We had created it thinking that we would use it to identify people for a private channel in Discord. We decided not to use that channel so there's no need to have the category anymore. You are a PIP voyage graduate; Lilian May Meaden was your voyage profile.

The Project operates in a team structure. There are currently three participant PIP Teams -- The Maintenance Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and the Biography Team. There is also the Voyage Team which guides new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team.

There are currently three different Biography Teams - The Biography Team, the Abandoned Team, and the Popular Team.

You're currently identified as a member of the Biography Team. The Biography Team works on profiles from their watchlist and other profiles that interest them.

Are you happy with the Team you are on? If you are interested in working with a different Team, please let us know.

If you have not already done so, we invite you to join the email GoogleGroup. We use the WikiTree Discord server #profile-improvement channel for our project. Neither is required; we also use the Profile_Improvement tag in G2G for Project announcements.

We thank you for all you do to help the Profile Improvement Project meet its goals. We would like to hear about the successes you’ve had and would also appreciate any feedback you have to help improve the Project. Please share your thoughts in a reply to this comment or via private message to one of us.

Sincerely,

Debi Hoag and Kay Knight, Co-Leaders, Profile Improvement Project

Hi Joan,

Thanks for your contact. It's really quite nice to pause and assess the last year. First, I really appreciate being part of the England Project. It's a special group full of friendly and extremely helpful WT'ers, always happy to assist in anyway they can.

I have divided my last year between Profile Improvement, Trailblazing and building my own skills. It has all been very enjoyable.

Unfortunately, last November I lost my Pre-1500 badge through inexperienced enthusiasm and since then have been hard at work trying to rectify my mistakes and improve my skills to regain qualification. This is proving an interesting and at times frustrating process (no doubt for all involved), however the end result will be worth it.

This leads me to provide some feedback. Although not only an EP matter, I think newly qualified Pre-1500 Badgers should be required to join the Medieval Project and commit to having their work peer reviewed by experienced Pre-1500 members for a number of profiles to ensure the requisite standards are well understood and applied. This could avoid newbies falling into the trap I did working away on my own. In my case I found several totally unsourced pre-1500 profiles in my family line which set a poor example and led me to using secondary sources, etc. Luckily I approached Michael Cayley for comment on one of my 'masterpieces' and he stopped my journey of destruction. Needless to say, there are now several profiles that should never have been created.

Redeeming myself and dealing with a family health issue has required me to drop Trailblazer duties for a while, but I hope to resume them in coming weeks.

Regards Alan

Congratulations on your Pre-1500 badge! Thank you for all of your work on the England project and for your continuing efforts to provide accuracy and sources to profiles on WikiTree. Please make sure to add pre-1500 as one of your followed tags in order to understand what we are working on as a group.
I would like to thank the Pre 1500 Review Team for this certification. I realise this is another step in developing my genealogy skills and I definitely have a long way to go. I am really looking forward to actively working with other WTers in this area.

I also want to particularly thank the England Project Orphan Trail Team who have guided me progressively to this point with great patience and skill. My last mentor, Ann (Browning- 5288) is an absolute treasure with wonderful research skills, high standards and is a whiz at translating medieval wills.

Hi Amelia,

Thanks for contact. It's been a real learning year for me and the friendliness, knowledgeable advice & co-operation I've received from the WT community has made it a most enjoyable time. I'm happy in my current project team although my contribution has been minor as I have been focussing on OT1,2 & 3. I intend to contribute more over coming months. I have no suggestions for change, etc as I really can't see a particular need at the moment. I also notice from Discord that continuous improvement is a feature of the EP. Keep up the great work. Hi Alan,

The Connect A Thon was fun, we hope you enjoyed yourself and are recovering. Thank you for joining us, it is appreciated. Our combined score was 13,335 51 more than the last CAT so well done.

The total overall figure was 84,388 new profiles added and numerous connections made. The total figure was down 1,451 on the January Thon

Check your personal figures here - https://wikitree.sdms.si/Challenges/ConnectAThon/TeamAndUser.htm (gives you a target for the next event)

Thanks again for last weekend, we look forward to working with you again in 3 months.

Hi Debi,

Thanks for your email on the annual PIP review.

I have enjoyed my experience and the friendly, willing help provided by other project members. After my initial PIP Voyage I was encouraged to do the Orphan Trail & am currently immersed in OT2. It's really good fun and I've really improved my research & profile writing. I suspect I've only retained about 60% of the information sent my way but that leaves me some choice morsels to rediscover as time passes. A special thanks to Leandra (Ford-7139) and Maureen (Fearn-339) for their patience.

In developing a profile I still rely on my established research techniques and often create a separate profile in MFT software which is linked to Ancestry. My main subscription is with Ancestry, but I also dabble with FindMyPast & Geneanet. I now use the free sources much more and have started using Wiki Sourcerer for research & find it very useful for creating citations & checking things through.

I have a great tendency to disappear down rabbit holes and find great satisfaction in trying to understand a profile in terms of the historical conditions and events they lived through.

I have no suggestions for improvement; my Wiki experience is too short for that.

Thanks for inviting me onto the GoogleGroup. I've applied and look forward to the posts.

All the best Alan

Thanks, Alan. We'll keep you as part of the Biography Team Level 1.

By the way, because of the way the messaging service works at WikiTree, we don't get notified about comments you put on your own profile. That's why it is recommended to use the reply link under the original message.

Dear Alan,

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing its first annual check-in with our project members. Please review the following and let us know if you are content where we have placed you or would like to be more involved.

We are in the process of transitioning to a team structure. There will be three participant PIP Teams to start -- The Maintenance Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and the Biography Team. There is also the Voyage Team who guide new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team. You're currently identified as a member of the Biography Team Level 1, working on profiles from your own watchlist and whatever else you find. Biography Teams Levels 2 and 3 will work on designated profiles for notables (Level 3) and everyday people (Level 2). Please let us know if you would like to help with another Team.

We would also like to invite you to join the email GoogleGroup and text chat Discord channel for our project. (When you request to join our GoogleGroup, please be sure to include your Wiki ID). Neither is required; we also use the Profile_Improvement tag in G2G for Project announcements. You will find more information on the GoogleGroup.

We thank you for all you do to help the Profile Improvement Project and WikiTree. The Project’s mission is to:

Make profiles beautiful! We clean up messy biography sections and sources, and try to set standards for attractive, useful, and well-written biographies, starting with those we manage.

We know you’re working on profiles *smile* We would like to hear about successes you’ve had toward the Project’s goals. We would also appreciate any feedback you might have to help us improve the Project. Please share your thoughts in a reply to this comment or privately via private message to either of us.

Sincerely,

Hi Alan

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Pam ~ WikiTree Pre-1700 Greeter

Thanks for the welcome Pam,

I'm really looking forward to getting into the pre 1700 profiles and very appreciative of all the guidance out there. I'll try my best to observe all the protocols but I'm sure I'll slip up at times & will check in often for help. Alan

Don't worry Alan, we all make mistakes sometimes ~ and the great thing about our collaborative tree is that there's always someone to ask so if I don't know the answer I'll know where/who to ask it to next.

Have fun, and Happy New Year!

Hi Alan

Thank you for adding your DNA to WikiTree. Getting the Best from DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

I hope this helps! If you have any questions or problems, let me know.

Take care

Hey Alan,

Glad you volunteered - Vegemite free zone though!  :-) You are now a member of the WikiTree Community. Please note we are trying to build one Collaborative Tree which means one profile per person. It is important to ensure no duplicates are entered as you add any Profiles to WikiTree.

If you need any help getting started check out the help section from the menu, top right, or head over to the G2G forum and take a minute to introduce yourself in the Tree House, you might also want to check out the introductory WikiTree video that a member created.

Our Mentor Team are a friendly bunch of volunteers who will be glad to help you with specific problems if you have any.

Welcome! Mags
