Harry William Davis was a son of Amos R. Davis and his wife, Sophie (Shilp) Davis. He was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on 31 October 1874.[1]
The 1880 U.S. Census recorded 5-year-old Harry W. Davis in his parents' household on Logan Avenue in Harrisburg. He was "at school." Other in the household were Amos R. Davis, 33 and a harnessmaker (his father); Sophia S. Davis, 27; brother Herman C. Davis, 8; and sisters Clara S. Davis, 2; and Emma C. Davis, 9 months (born in September of the previous year). All were born in Pennsylvania to parents born in Pennsylvania.[2]
Harry W. Davis was married to Malinda Long in about 1899. The 1900 U.S. Census recorded Harry W. Davis and Malinda M. Davis in Harrisburg Ward 9, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, as "boarders" in the household of Milton Kocher and his wife Mary R. Kocher (Malinda's sister). Harry was age 25 and working as an agent in the crackers industry; Malinda was 22; they had been married 1 year and had no children.[3]
On April 25, 1910, the 1910 U.S. Census recorded Harry W. Davis, age 35, and wife Malinda Davis, 31, in Harrisburg Ward 8. They had been married 11 years. Harry was a machinist with his own shop. Melinda had 4 had children, all of whom were living. Enumerated children were: Lloyd Davis, 9; George Davis, 7; Vera Davis 6; and Ruth Davis 1/12 (1 month old). All household members were born in Pennsylvania of Pennsylvania-born parents.[4]
Harry's wife Malinda died from ovarian cancer at the age of 38, on 14 February 1917, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.[5]
Harry William Davis registered for the World War I draft in Harrisburg on 12 September 1918. He said he was 43 years old, born 30 October 1874, residing at 1272 Miller Street in Harrisburg. He was tall and slender, with blue eyes and black hair. He worked as a machinist, for Harrisburg Welding and Brazing Company of 94 South Cameron Street in Harrisburg. He listed his nearest relative as Lloyd Harold Davis, also of 1272 Miller Street. [6]
Harry William Davis was married to Nora Stubblebine as his second wife, in the parsonage of St Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Millersburg, Pennsylvania, on 12 March 1919.[7][8]
The 1920 U.S. Census recorded 44-year-old Harry W. Davis on Walnut Street in Harrisburg. Others in the household were wife Eleanor Davis, 39; son Loyd H. Davis, 19; son George Davis, 17; daughter Vera Davis, 16; and daughter Ruth Davis, 10. Harry was a machinist for the Harrisburg Brazing Company and Loyd was a clerk for the Bowman Company. All household members were born in Pennsylvania to parents born in Pennsylvania. The three younger children had attended school within the year.[9]
The 1930 U.S. Census recorded 55-year-old Harry W. Davis as head of a household at 1629 Regina Street in Harrisburg. He was a machinist in a pipe mill and he owned his home, valued at $6000. Others in the household were wife H. Nora Davis, 54; son L. George A. Davis, 27, a clerk in a grocery store; daughter Ruth Davis, 20, a stenographer in the wholesale machining industry; and his father-in-law, 77-year-old William M. Stubblebine, a widower and retired. All were born in Pennsylvania to parents born in Pennsylvania.[10]
Harry Davis died in Harrisburg on 7 May 1939 and was buried in East Harrisburg Cemetery. His wife Nora survived him. [11]
