Civil War records obtained from the National Archives for John S. Davis show him to be 32 years old at the time of his enlistment on January 4th 1864 at Ray Township Indiana. He was a Private with Capt. McCoy’s Company D of the 123rd Indiana Infantry. His Muster-In date was January 20th 1864 at Greensburg Indiana. The records show that he was present for the monthly Company Muster Roll Calls from the time of his enlistment until the roll calls for the months of September, October, November and December of 1864. Due to a torn microfilm at the National Archives, the only information available for his absence is that for some unknown reason, he was in the hospital at Knoxville Tennessee. He returned to duty in January of 1865 and served until the end of the Civil War. He was Mustered-Out on August 25th 1865 at Lexington, North Carolina. The records show that at the time of his enlistment he was 32 years old and was 6’5” tall with light hair, hazel eyes, dark complexion and was born in Union County, Indiana. After the War ended, he and his family left Franklin County, Indiana and settled in Woodford County, Illinois where he passed away on January 25th 1871. He is buried at the Panther Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery 1403 County Road 2000E in Roanoke Illinois. Many of the headstones at the cemetery including John’s have damage from vandalism that has occurred over the years. The Dept. of Veterans Affairs has a program for the replacement of damaged or vandalized Veterans headstones. An application was submitted for a Civil War Veteran Headstone and was approved in January of 2014 and the new headstone was put in place on May 28th 2014.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
