His parents were John Davies (a chandler) and Elizabeth (nee Evans). He arrived in America in June of 1851 with his mother, his brothers John and David, and sister Eliza. He spent a few years working in the coal mines at Pomeroy, Ohio before finally settling in Blue Earth County, Minnesota in April 1855.  He married Mary Davis in 1865, and they had one child, Mary Y. Davis, who subsequently married John F. Dackins. Thomas' wife, Mary, died in 1871. Eight years later Thomas married Margaret Barrett. In 1889 the couple left their farm in Cambria and took up residence in Mankato, where they were to spend the rest of their lives. In 1896 Thomas and Margaret made a brief return visit to Llanarth in Wales.
