Biography

Rachel Davis was born on at Roxbury, Massachusetts on August 16, 1672, the daughter of William Davis and his third wife Jane Adams, [1] and was baptized on May 18, 1673. [2] [3]

Rachel married Josiah Goddard, son of William and Elizabeth (Miles) Goddard [3] on January 28, 1695/6 at Watertown, Massachusetts. [4] Josiah Goddard was born about 1672. [5] and died December 19, 1720 at Watertown. [4]

Josiah Goddard, yeoman of Watertown, wrote his will on December 29, 1719. In it he names: [6]

  • wife Rachel
  • sons Ebenezer, Josiah and William Goddard
  • daughter Rachel, wife of Obadiah Coolidge
  • daughters Jane and Elizabeth Goddard [6]
1725: December 10: The Selectman sent Deacon William Brown and Mr. Thomas Larned/Learned to Mrs. Rachel Goddard to: agree with Her to board and take care of James Gipson for One yeare next Comeing yet not exceeding 5s pr Weeke . [4]
1727: March 24: Obadiah Coolidge, son in law to Rachel Goddard, declared to the Selectman that he was unable to support his family. [4]
1727: April 27: Selectman ordered that: Mr. Obadiah Coollidges Wife & Children and household goods be forthwith Removed To the Dwelling houfe of the Widow Rachel Goddard of said Town, their to Continue under the care of the sd Widdow Goddard & her son Ebenezer until further Order from the Selectmen. [4]
1727: May 11: As Mr. Coolidge had not complied with the preceeding orders, the Selectman ordered Mr. Ebenezer Goddard to carry them out, at which time he removed the wife, children and goods of Obadiah Coolidge to his mothers house. ([4]

Widow Rachel Goddard died April 23, 1740. [4]
