John was born between 1844-1848 at Barnstable (sic), Devon, his parents were George Davis and Fanny Jones . See notes at end of biography regarding his birth date.
To date we have not been able to confirm with clarity his arrival in Australia, although his death certificate states he had been in NSW for 49 years, which estimates arrival at 1864. Its probable the 'John Davis', aged 21 that arrived on the "Sir Robert Sale" in 1864 as an Assisted Immigrant[1] is ours. This would place his birth at 1843, the timeline fits, but we can't "prove" it was him.
John Charles Davis married[2]Zenobia Mundy on 10th October 1876 at St Paul's Church, Tamworth in the presence of John Mundy and Ann Snell. Rhonda and Peggy were able to obtain a copy of the entry at the Church which finally yielded his parents names.
John died[3] on Christmas Day, 25th December 1913 at Denne St, West Tamworth and was buried 27th December 1913 at the Church of England Cemetery, Tamworth, Section B22, Row H5[4]
