Caution: there is considerable internet fiction regarding this person. If you add or alter this profile please document your change with primary sources and use inline citations. Thank you.

Ailsey Davis is believed to have been born about 1728 at Milford Hundred, Cecil County, Maryland, the third child of of William Davis and Anne Walker Davis. While birth records have not been located, property and court records in Virginia (see William Davis) confirm the family relationships.

She married Elijah Teague in 1743 in Fredericksburg, Virginia where her parents had moved the family by 1738. She is believed to have passed away 1791. Elijah was also born Maryland (Elk Hundred, Cecil County) about 1726 and had moved to Virginia. Elijah, a Captain in the Continental Army, was killed near Black Jack, Newberry County, South Carolina. Varying accounts of his demise are found in his profile.

Ailsey resided during the American Revolution at Black Jack, Ninety Six District, South Carolina, now Newberry, and acted in the capacity of patriot by rendering material aid to the Army. She furnished provisions and forage for militia use.

Ailsey is one of the Women Patriots recognized by the Daughters of the American Revolution for her patriotic service of furnishing supplies during the U.S. Revolutionary War. [1]

Research Notes

It has been stated several places that her maiden name has not been found and thus numerous maiden names have been suggested. However, her granddaughter Susannah Johnson in her book "Recollections of the Rev. John Johson" (Southern Methodist Publishing House, 1869) states on page 13, "My Grandmother Teague's maiden name was Ailsey Davis."[3] Given that this source is a granddaughter and this record is published less than a hundred years after the death of Ailsey this should probably be given strong consideration. The book gives no indication as to Ailsey's parentage or even place of birth. It is unknown if this source has for some reason been discounted by other researchers or if it was not available to them.

Note that the marriage of William Davis and Anne Walker was about 1724. This would make the occasionally seen birth date of Anne as about 1726 much more likely than the sometimes seen 1719. That would also place the birth in Maryland.

Also noted is a discussion at the apparently no longer updated Teague Family Resource site regarding the name Ailsey. This states that the name is akin to Elsie and that "Alice" is a corruption by those unfamiliar with the name in context of the time.

A statement added to the profile which gave her place of death as Davistown, Benton County, Alabama in 1850 is without documentation and would place her age as 125 at death and so has been removed from the profile.

ELIJAH ARNOLD TEAGUE SR.14 was born on 01 May 1726 in Elk Hundred, Cecil County, Maryland. He died on 06 Oct 1787 in Black Jack, Newberry County, South Carolina. He married Alsey "Alice" Davis, daughter of James DAVIS, about 1745 in St. Alphonse Church, Frederick County, Virginia. She was born between 1726-1728 in Milford Hundred, Cecil County, Maryland. She died on 25 Mar 1789 in Bush River, Newberry County, South Carolina.

In George Pemberton's (1819-1878) Summary: "My grandmother on my mother's side was named Susan Teague. Her father was Elijah Teague, a Captain in the old Revolutionary War; was captured by a squad of 8 Tories, and hung. He had 3 sons who followed the 8 Tories, and killed all of these except (1) Ned Mitchuseson." The account of his murder by Tories is found in "Quakers in S. Carolina Backcountry, Part II-Bush River" by Williard C Heiss,1969.

Also listed in "Stub Entries to Indents issued in payment of Claims against South Carolina growing out of the Revolution, Books 157 #318 Book is Mrs Alee Teague. After the murder of her husband, she continued to supply the militia from her farm. (In this record the C was miscopied as an E.) The next entry in the book is to her son Samuel Teague. [4][1]

Research shows Elijah only had one wife. It is believed a second wife sometimes seen as Alice Leavell is simply a corruption of his wife Ailsey (a well-known patriot) that has crept into records over time.

Update (5 Oct 2018): changed parents to "confident". The work by Jack Day led to additional property and court records in Virginia which confirm the family relationships despite the lack of the earlier Maryland records.

Changed the parents to "uncertain". Update (3 Oct 2018): The line going further back has now been sourced (h/t Jack Day). What is currently needed is documentation that Ailsey is the daughter of William and Ann.

Leavell-15 and Davis-5896 appear to represent the same person because: From my research it appears Alice Leavell-15 is simply a corruption of Ailsey (known as Alice but that is probably incorrect and should probably be Elsie) Davis who it appears is the only wife of Elijah Teague. I believe Leavell-15 should be merged into Davis-5896 with LNAB to be Davis. This will eliminate what appears to be erroneous two wives of Elijah.

Davis-18649 and Davis-5896 appear to represent the same person because: I have a PDF compiled by a Teague cousin and researcher from other Teague researchers and the Teague Family association. I think the Two Alice/Alsey's are the same. my geni bones feel it. Be delighted to share the PDF with you. Its not complete and tere are a few errors, along with being 443 pages with sources. I changed Alice's name from Morgan as I don't have evidence that her name was Morgan. But I do have where Elijah Jr m. Sarah Morgan, maybe that was where the original PM got confused.
