Birds Point, MO April 1st, 1862
Dear Mother,
I have not got to the Regimen yet but I thought you would expect to hear from me again by this time, I suppose that if you did not get the letter that I wrote to you, you saw C.M. Hills and know that I enlisted at the recruiting office at Benton Barracks.
I staid in the office building about two weeks and then went to the barrack with about a hundred soldiers who had come out of the hospital and were waiting to get to their Regs; nine of them belonged to the 27th; we staid there 4 days and were then placed p. 2 refered from one officer to another I had been over the greater of two large buildings.
I at last a note to the general recruiting appear at this place. I have been sworn in and received a transfer to Co C of the 47th . I do not know but soon I shall go to the Reg but the physician who examined me said that there were several men in the hospital from the 47th Ill that he expected to sent out in a day or two and I shall be sent with them I have good living here and nothing to do but answer roll call twice a day and take care of myself. I can get here if I wish to.
I do not know where the Reg is at present at one of the offices in the city they said it was at Ft. d at another they said it was still at Commerce. The has been fine and warm until last night when it comes P. 3 and has not stopped yet. For a while I was in 2 the reported thing at New Madrid. But yesterday emacrat had dispatches from there and said nothing about it. I do not know that I have anything more to write at present but I will try to write again to you and to others that I promised to write to as soon as I get to the Reg
Your son James
P.S. I have just been to the hospital and seen the men from the 7th there is only one who is going back soon he expects to start next ? day I do not know whether I shall wait for him or not. They tell me the Reg is at New Madrid.
(no date)
Spring like and some of the trees begin to look quite green. I did not tell either your or C.W. Hill where to direct your letters because I did not know how long I should stop at Camp Benton. If you direct to the Co. U. Reg. and to either St. Louis or Cairo it will be sent to the Reg. You can see by the following diagram how we are situated.
Your son James
