DAWNEY JOHN Son and heir of Nicholas Dawney.

CAUTION – There was another John de Alneto living in the same time frame. A John de Alneto was appointed as one of three commissioners of array in 1316 at a time when John son of Nicholas was aged about 14 years old. This John de Alneto was a younger brother of Nicholas de Alneto.

[Calendar Fine Rolls EII] 23 February 1324 Westminster. John Dauney has given security by oath etc. And has found as mainpernors Nicholas Dauney, John Triagu, knights of the county of Cornwall, and 4 others, each of whom has mainprised for his good behaviour under a penalty of 200/ and that he, according to his estate, will equip himself suitably with armour, so that he will be ready to gone on the king's service to the parts of the duchy of Aquitaine and elsewhere according to the king's ordinance.

Power to Henry le Gulden, escheator in the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset, to whom the king made order as above, to take the fealty of John Dauney and deliver to him a messuage and carucate of land in Leyth late of Nicholas his father.

In the survey of Devon of 1346, William Spek and John Dawney were holding a sixth part of Boc Bruer [not indexed] of the honour of Lancaster, Nicholas Dawney and William Spek prior tenants. [Survey undertaken in either 1303 or 1316.]

The manor of Arwuthol in Cornwall held to him and the heirs male of his body, with successive remainders to Richard, son of Alice late the wife of John Daumarle, and the heirs male of his body, to Thomas son of Isabel de Kilgath and the heirs male of his body, to William Daunee and the heirs male of his body, to John brother of Nicholas Dauney and the heirs male of his body, and to the right heirs of the said John Daunee. One acre of land Cornwish held of the said inheritance by JOHN DAUNEE, THE UNCLE, for his life. The manor of Cornewoda with the advowson of the church held of Andrew de Medestede to him and the heirs male of his body, with remainder to Richard, son of Alice the wife of John Daumarle, and the heirs male of his body, as is contained in a fine levied in the king's court at Westminster on the quinzaine of Holy Trinity 19EIII.
