Gertrude, Abbess d'Hamage ^[1]

Parentage

Delaforce states that Gertrude was the daughter of Theodebald, son of Agivald, Duke of Bavaria, who was one of the husbands of Walrada of Lombardy. ^[1]

Charles Cawley states that Theodebald married Waldrada, during the same year of his paralysis, but does not name Gertrude as a child. ^[2]

Convent at Hamage

Gertrude founded the convent at Hamage near Douai and became the first abbess. ^[1]

Issue

Gertrude's status as abbess did not prevent her from having children by Ricomer de Bourgogne and then after his death, Sandregisisle.^[1]

By Ricomer Gertrude was the mother of Bertrude, who married Clothaire II.^[1]

Delaforce reports that by Sandregisisle Gertrude was the mother of Nanthild, who was the cousin and second wife of the powerful Dagobert I, the son of Clothaire II.^[1] However, no documentation has been found to support this. Documentation by Cawley concerning Nanthild, tends to refute such a connection. This documentation ^[3] includes:

• The "Liber Historiæ Francorum," refers to her as Saxon; and the "Gesta Dagoberti," calls her German.
• She is first referred to, ante 629/30, as maiden of the bed-chamber and only after 19 Jan 639 as Regent.
