William was the son of Walter Lindsay.[1]
He was heir of Randolph de Lindesay, Feudal Lord of Northumbria. He sat in Parliament in 1164. He was a hostage for King William in 1174.[2] After 1174 he held the Office of Justiciar of Scotland. He was the Feudal Lord of Crawford, Baron of Luffness in Parliament.

Sir William did not marry Marjory. That was his elder son Sir David Lindsay of Luffness, 3rd Lord of Crawford, who married 1201 "Margerie", probably the natural dau. of King William, 6th Earl of Huntingdon.
Sir William's father was William de Lindsay of Luffness who m. ca 1154 the unnamed dau. of Thor, Lord of Tranent, Sheriff of Edinburghshire, and granddau. of Sveinn, Lord of Crawford and Binning.
