Biography

Daughter of Owain Cyfeiliog

Constance was the daughter of Owain Cyfeiliog, hence her name was Constance ferch Owain Cyfeiliog [1][2]

Her father's name was spelled variously by the English, most often Kevelioc and this affected how Constance was known. Using the English spellings, the 1580 Visitation of Chester, says that Constance was the daughter of Owen Keveliock prince of Powes[3] / Powiss.[4]

Her father's longer patronymic was Owain Cyfeiliog ap Gruffudd ap Maredudd ap Bleddyn ap Cynfyn. [5] Owain Cyfeiliog was called the Prince-Bard. He was of record in 1149 and died in 1197 near Welshpool. [5]

Owain had two wives. It is not clear who Constance' mother was. [5] Depending on who Constance' mother was, she was either a full sister of or half sister of Gwenwynwyn. [5]

1160 Birth

Darrell Wolcott places Constance's birth in the year 1160. [6]

Constance would have been born before her father's death in 1197. By 1186 her brother or half-brother Gwenwynwyn was an adult, when he murdered his cousin Owain ap Madog. [5]. so place the birth of Gwenwynwyn, who would have been older than Constance, at, say, 1150.

Marriage to David

Various sources agree that Constance was married to David Malpas but differ as to which David. See Research Notes.

Research Notes

Was her husband David ap Rafe?

Boyer presents Constance ferch Owain Cyfeiliog as the daughter of Owein Cyfeiliog and an unidentified mother, making her a half-sister of Gwenwynwyn. [5] In addition, Boyer presents Constance ferch Owain Cyfeiliog [2] as married to David Malpas, son of Ralph ab Einion ap Dafydd ap Miles, who was born, say 1150.[2]

Boyer adds that David Malpas, born, say, 1150, was the son of Ralph ab Einion ap Dafydd ap Miles.[2] Ralph was also known as Ralph de Malpas. Boyer estimates the birth year for David's father Ralph at, say, 1100. [2] Wolcott also places David's birth at 1150 [6] which would make him aged 30 at the estimated 1180 wedding.

Was her husband David the Bastard?

The Visitation of Cheshire in the table "Mallpass, Barons of Mallpass" shows Oweni Keveliock p Powiss as the father of Constancia ferch Oweni.[7] The Visitation further identifies Constancia, daughter of Oweni Keveliock p. Powiss, as the wife of David Malpas [7] who is described as David filiis naturalis,"' (David the Bastard), David being the son of Will'm's de Malpas and his wife Beatrix fil. naturalis Rogeri Montealt. [7]

[9]

Peter Cotgreave [10] shows Constance, daughter of Owain Keveliock, married to David "the Bastard" de Malpas, active 1242-1250's.

However, Cotgreave [10] shows Constance, daughter of Owain Keveliock, married to David "the Bastard" de Malpas, active 1242-1250's.

David the Bastard lived about 1210-1265 and married Alice de Boneville. Therefore it appears that Boyer, who follows Bartrum, is more likely correct, and that Constance' husband was David ap Ralph (or Dafydd ap Rafe).

Boyer attempts to harmonize the accounts by noting that Sir David's father Ralph de Malpas has been identified as the same person as Sir William de Malpas who had his bastard son David by Beatrix de Montalt, dau of Robert de Montalt, Robert having been seneschal of the Earl of Chester. [5] However, David the Bastard was born a generation or two later and married Alice de Boneville.

Was her husband David le Clerk?

  • Cherleton refers to David as "David le Clerk" which confuses him with another David de Malpas living a century earleir. [1]

Who were the children of Constance?

Constance was once shown with the following children, however, these are children of David the Bastard, and would also be Constance' children only if David the Bastard was Constance' husband.

  1. Beatrix, was married to William Patrick, knight,[4] and Roderick ap Griffin,[3] She became the mother of Isabel, wife of Richard de Sutton [1]
  2. Idonea, who was married to Sir Vrian de Speer [St Peere][3] alias Vrany St Petri, knight,[4] alias Urian St Petri;[8]

DePowis-2 and Kevelick-1 do not represent the same person because: The only common factor appears to be the name of the husband. With the discrepancy in dates of birth, I would contemplate that these two women were 1st and 2nd wives rather than the same person. Further research is recommended. Bill
