Biography

Barbara (DeVaullt) Layne first appears in the historical records when she married John Layne in Washington County, Virginia on 31 July 1789. John and Barbara Layne moved to Marion County, Tennessee where the couple raised a family. John Layne died prior to the 1850 census in Marion County and Barbara then moved to Grundy County, Tennessee to live with one of her children. She appears in both the 1850 and 1860 census of Grundy Co, TN.

DNA testing is indicates that Barbara (Devault) Layne shares a close family relationship with Mary (Devault) Six who married John Six who in Washington Co, VA, along with Jacob Devault Senior, Abraham Devault, David Devault and Jacob Devault Jr who all filed Land claims in Washington Co, TN in the area which now falls into Scott Co, VA.

Various family trees want to show Barbara (Devault) Layne and her sister, Mary (Devault Six, as the daughters to a Dewald couple who lived, died and are buried in Berks Co, Pennsylvania. In fact some have added the first name Elizabeth to Barbara Devault in an attempt to make her fit into that family. Prior to looking into the un-indexed Land, Tax and Court Records of Washington Co, VA, data was out there which indicated the close family ties between Barbara, Mary, Abraham and Jacob Devault (Jr) who all appear in the early Washington County, VA records. Family ties to Abraham and David Devault were completely ignored by Barbara and Mary Devault researchers. It makes no sense that two young girls would be hundreds of miles away from their parents in Pennsylvania. It is far more logical to think that they were living in close proximity to other family members living in Washington County, VA.

DNA testing confirms the family connections between Barbara's descendants to the descendants of Abraham, Mary, Jacob Jr. and David Devault. The research findings obtained from the un-indexed county records also brings to light the fact that there was a Jacob Devault Senior living in Washington County, VA as early as 1783 to 1804, which is prior to and during the marriages of the Devault sisters, Barbara and Mary.
