Joost De Baun was of French Huguenot origins, came to America in 1683 from Middleburgh, Holland, with his wife and eldest son Jacobus, and first settled at Bushwick, Long Island where he was town clerk.

Joost De Baun and Elizabeth Drabbe had the following children: Matie, Jacobus, Christian, Christyne, Carrel, Christina, Marie, Karel, Catharine, and Margrietje. Christian is shown as being born in Brooklyn, NY., Abt 1685. Jacobus is shown as being born Bef.... 1683 in Middleburg, Zeeland, Netherlands.

Are in New York in 1683; settled in New Utrecht, Long Island after a short stay in Bushwick, Long Island, where he was clerk of the town and schoolmaster. Moved to Orange County, NY then into New Jersey about 1704. His will dated 28 Nov 1706, and proved 4 Jun 1724, can be found in the Archives in Trenton, NJ.

The fact that there is no confirmation, source, or corroborating evidence that it is factual, which is the standard. Wikitree information is supposed to promote facts supported by sources, otherwise state "unknown". Beaune is also historically a very Catholic area, being influced by the Duke of Burgundy, and not an area of Protestant activity. Finally, de Baun is pronounced "duh Bawn" and Beaune is pronounced, roughly, "bone", so although they look slightly similar, the words are not the same. Beaune is a fabulous area to visit, however!

This is a very interesting person. I am currently doing research to the family De Baen in the Netherlands which later was changed to: De Baan. As you mentioned Joost de Baen left France to travel to Middleburg. A place relatively nearby Hellevoetsluis. I am curious if there is a connection between Joost and Leendert Jansz de Baan (abt.1679-). To be continued. I am going to do more research!
