Biography

Richard de Brewes (or Brewse, Breuse),^[1] younger son of John de Brewes and his wife Margaret ferch Llywelyn, was born before 1232.^[2]

Father: John de Brewes, "lord of Gower, also of Bramber, Sussex, Buckingham and Bourton, Buckinghamshire",^[2] son of William de Brewes of Bramber and Maud de Clare (daughter of surety baron Richard de Clare, Knt.).^[3]

Mother: Margaret of Wales, daughter of Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, Prince of North Wales.^[2]

Richard de Brewes, Knt., married Alice le Rus, daughter of William le Rus and Agatha de Clere, before 9 September 1265 as her second husband. Alice was the widow of Richard Longespée, Knt. (died 1261). She was born about 1246 ("25 Dec. 1245, or 1247, or 1 Jan. 1245/6").^[2]

Children: Richard and Alice had two sons and two daughters:

• Giles de Brewes, Knt., married (1) Katherine de Huntingfield, (2) Joan de Beaumont^[3]
• Richard de Brewes^[3]
• Margaret de Brewes, married Roger de Coleville, Knt.^[3]
• Sibyl de Brewes, married Constantine de Mortimer^[3]
• Mary de Brewes, married John de Weyland by 1287/88^[4]

Richard de Brewes, Knt., in right of his wife of Stinton (in Salle), Norfolk, Ludborough, Lincolnshire, Akenham, Hasketon, Stradbrooke, and Whittingham (in Fressingfield), Suffolk, Bromley, Surrey, etc., died shortly before 18 June 1292 and was buried in Woodbridge Priory, Suffolk.^[3]

Research Notes

Birth location: Lewis gives Richard's birth location as "at of" Stinton in Salle & Heydon, Norfolk, England.^[5] Lewis's use of "at of" indicates that the birth location is not known.^[6] Richardson does not say where Richard was born. He does, however, note that Richard was of Stinton "in right of his wife", which makes it unlikely that he was born there. Richard's father was "of Bramber, Sussex",^[2] making it the more likely birth location.

Death location: Richard was buried in Suffolk^[3] but that does not necessarily mean he died there.

Mary (Brewes) de Weyland

Richardson's published works (Magna Carta Ancestry, 2011 and Royal Ancestry, 2013) do not include Mary as a daughter of Sir Richard de Breuse, her marriage to John de Weyland, or that they had a son Richard, although he did name Mary as a daughter in an SGM post in 2000,^[7] announcing the trail that included Mary, daughter of Richard and Alice: "Mary de Breuse, married in or before 1288 (date of fine) to John de Weyland (died 1312), of Blaxhall, Ashbocking, etc., Suffolk." Their son "Richard de Weyland (died 1319)" was the father of Cecily de Weyland who "married before 10 May 1335, Sir Bartholomew de Burghersh, 4th Lord Burghersh."

Richardson's Royal Ancestry includes Sir Richard de Weyland as father of Cecily (wife of Sir Bartholomew de Burghersh) and further identifies Cecily's mother as Joan de Ufford, daughter of Robert de Ufford, Knt., 1st Lord Ufford.^[8] It does not include Mary, Richard's mother, as a daughter of this Richard de Brewes: Richardson lists only Margaret and Sibyl as their daughters.^[3] Subsequent research must have case doubt that Mary was also the daughterof Richard and Alice (Rus) de Brewes.

The profile for Mary was detached and re-attached more than once. The latest discussion (see this G2G post) was sparked by re-focusing on the 1288 fine mentioned in Richardson's 2000 SGM post,^[7] which was also used as a source for GeneaJourney: The Geni entry for Mary cites GeneaJourney's entry for "Braose, Lords of Abergavenny and Bramber", which footnotes Mary with a citation: "Mary, the wife of Sir John de Weyland, has been claimed in several sources to be the granddaughter of Richard de Braose (by his son John), but from a feet of fines record she is stated to be the daughter of Richard and Alice."^[9] The January 2020 G2G discussion about Mary led to this image of the fine with the comment that it says, in part, "in free marriage with Mary daughter of the aforesaid Richard and Alice". So her profile has been re-attached (again).
