Biography

Hugh was the son of Hudard of Dutton.[1]

Hugh of Dutton was the father of:

  1. Hugh, eldest son, circa 1170-75, with his consent, his father granted his younger brother, Adam, one carrucate of land in Weston, near Runcorn in Cheshire, for which Adam does homage to him, married Hamon of Massey's daughter;[2]
  2. Adam, circa 1170-75 his father granted him one carrucate of land in Weston, near Runcorn in Cheshire, for which he does homage to his older brother, Hugh; married Agnes, a daughter of Roger fitz Alured, with whom he acquired a moiety of Warburton, and founded the family of Warburton of Arley;[2]
  3. Geoffrey, youngest son, acquired Cheadle by marriage;[2]

Hugh appears to have survived until about the end of Henry II's reign [which was from 1154 to 1189].[2]

"Hugh de Dutton, Son of Hugh, Son of Hodard, had the Lands which his father Hugh held of the Baron of Halton, confirmed unto him by William, son of Nigell, Constable to Randle the Second, and by William his son, on that day when the said William the Father, and William the son, did visit Hugh, the son of Hodard on his Death-bed at Kekwick ; at which time Hugh, the son of Hodard, gave unto William the Father his Coat of Mail and his Charging-Horse; and Hugh, the son of that Hugh, gave unto William the son, a Palfrey and a Sparrow-hawk. This was about the end of the Reign of King Henry the First" [3]
"This Hugh de Dutton had issue Hugh Dutton son and heir; Adam de Dutton, another son, from whom the Warburtons of Arley are descended ; Geffrey de Dutton, another son, from whom the Duttons of Chedill in this county were propagated, who assumed the sirname of Chedill, and continued to the reign of Edward the Third, till Sir Roger de Chedill, the last of that family, dying 1 Edward III. 1327, left his inheritance to be shared by his two daughters and heirs, Clemence and Agnes." [4]

Hugh de Dutton, was the father of Adam de Dutton, lord of Dutton, and Warburton in the time of Henry 2, who married Agnes, daughter and coheir of Roger Fitz-Alured in the time of Henry 2. [5]

William fitz-Nigell, second baron of Halton, and constable of Cheshire, gave Newton near Chester to the monastery of St Werburge in Chester, together with the service of Hugh son of Hudard of Dutton of four oxgangs of land, and the service of Wiceline of two oxganges, in 1119.[1]

Circa 1170-75, Hugh of Dutton granted one carrucate of land in Weston, near Runcorn in Cheshire, to his son Adam, with the consent of his eldest son, Hugh; Adam did homage for it to his elder brother, Hugh, and held it of his father as his knight, for an annual render of a pair of gilt spurs, which Hugh confirmed by charter witnessed by Henry prior of Norton, Richard Phitone, Geoffrey Escrope [Scrope], Ivo of Daiville, Radulf of Bidon, Randulf son of Gilbert, John son of Thurstan, Maheu his son, Hamo of Berdinton [Bartington], Henry of Esteleia, Wrono, Warino, William son of Ivo, Robert son of Roger, Haketto son of Haketti, Geoffrey of Meringes, Gilbert son of Rannulf. Research Notes

Barraclough states "The anonymous Memorials of the Duttons of Dutton in Cheshire (1901), which was actually written by G B Morgan, is valueless for the medieval period."[2]

Who is "Handle the Second" supposed to be, as mentioned in our biography?

Is that a garble for Henry Curtmantle?
